LG Display, a major Korean display maker, is expected to stop producing liquid-crystal display (LCD) panels for TVs by the end of this year at the earliest, industry sources said Monday, amid falling profitability and fierce competition from Chinese rivals.

The company said in a regulatory filing last week that it was reviewing an end of production at its LCD TV panel factory in Paju, Gyeonggi, without specifying the exact date of production suspension.

The panel maker has been scaling down its loss-making LCD TV panel business, with a goal of discontinuing domestic production as early as possible. It has also said it will reduce production in China in a phased manner.

Demand was falling at an "unprecedented level" both for LCD and premium organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, the company said during an earnings call in October, after years of pandemic-driven strong growth for personal IT devices.

Facing mounting challenges, the company has been trying to turn its business around by putting more resources in LCD panels for IT products and high-margin OLED business and expanding its high-value make-to-order business.

Kim Yang-jae, an analyst at Daol Investment & Securities, forecast OLED panels will make up for more than 60 percent of LG Display"s revenue by 2023, up from less than 40 percent in 2021.

LG Display"s fourth-quarter operating profit is forecast to be around 515.9 billion won, according to an estimate by Yonhap Infomax, the financial news and information arm of Yonhap News Agency.

Samsung Display, Samsung Electronics" display unit, had scaled down its LCD TV panel business since mid-2010 and completely stopped production in June.

It"s all quiet on LCD Road, in Paju, Gyeonggi, these days, sort of like a ghost town. Restaurants are empty and nearby apartment buildings are looking run down.

The watch looks sharp and felt far more solid than its design might suggest. The band was also quite nice, making the watch comfortable to wear, and once our tester had the device set up, its display was easy to read. LCD panels are backlit by LED lights, so they rely on a backlight behind the panel to make the picture visible, and the LCD layer can"t prevent all light from escaping out of the screen. This means that even in a black scene, the backlight is still on, and some light escapes, causing blacks to appear gray.

Local dimming features on LED TVs are a way to improve the contrast ratio. Since these TVs consist of LED backlights behind an LCD panel, local dimming aims to turn off, or dim, certain zones of the LED backlight, making blacks look darker and highlights brighter. However, there may be some issues with local dimming on some TVs as it could cause blooming around bright objects or for entire zones to light up when there"s a small object. Overall, most local dimming features on modern TV do an effective job at improving the picture quality in dark scenes, and only some lower-end models will have glaring problems.

You may have used an electronic device with a small Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) which has a textual hierarchical menu system for setting device configuration parameters. If you have tried writing menu code for your Arduino projects, you will recognise the challenge in developing a generic menu system for an open prototyping platform. The Select button on the LCD shield starts/stops a timer, with a long press resetting the timer. A long press of Up enters the menu. Up/Down/Right buttons are for navigating the menu, and Select for choosing a menu item. When an item is selected, Up/Down are used for changing values. When the Reset menu item is displayed, a long press of Select loads default configuration values. Digital pin 2 is used for activating a beeper for the alarm.
