olympus tg-860 tough waterproof digital camera with 3-inch lcd free sample
Pros - Incredibly sturdy and fairly easy to use. It is indeed waterproof and I think it is a good size. You can see it underwater and it works under water.

The Olympus TG-860 is a 16-megapixel compact camera that is waterproof to a depth of 15m, shockproof from 2.1m, freezeproof to -10 °C and crushproof up to 100kg. The TG-860 features a 21-105mm zoom lens, improved video capture options, GPS with multiple satellite system support, built-in Wi-Fi, a variety of shooting modes, a 180-degree flip LCD, two customisable function buttons and Full HD video capture at 60 frames per second. Available in white, orange or black, the Olympus TG-860 costs around £230 /$250.
It’s worth noting that, in an age when most compact point and shoots have been killed off by the camera facilities of our smartphones, the toughened qualities of the Olympus TG-860, perhaps more than any other factor, give it reason to still exist. For the record, the TG-860 is claimed to be waterproof to depths of 15 metres, shockproof against drops from 2.1 metres in height, crush-proofed to withstand pressures equivalent to 100kg, plus also freeze proof down to -10°C. Like the OM-D range, the camera also comes with body integral 5-axis image stabilisation in an attempt to deliver blur free photography and video (here at capture rates up to 60fps). Handy, as there is not much in the way of a handgrip provided on this almost completely flat-fronted camera. Nevertheless the TG-860 feels reassuringly solid when gripped in the palm, with no discernable ‘give’ to the bodywork if squeezed particularly tightly.
As one would expect, the Olympus TG-860 is Wi-Fi enabled and compatible with the free-to-download Olympus OI Share app. It also offers up built-in GPS, whilst at its heart is a TruePic VII processor wedded to that 16MP CMOS chip. Full HD videos are included as standard, at up to 60fps and with stereo sound, as is the regulation slow motion video mode for sports fanatics and dedicated selfie mode for narcissists. Also useful for this purpose is the 3-inch back plate LCD, that can be flipped up to face the subject. Resolution is a standard 460K dots.
Moving to examine the rear of the TG-860, and more than four fifths of the camera’s back plate is taken over by a large, tilting LCD screen that seems to exist purely for the taking of self portraits, as it flips upwards to face whatever is in front of the camera, but doesn’t tilt downwards or flip outwards to allow for further creative framing. On the plus side, this minimizes the potential for possible damage to hinges should the camera be dropped or take a knock – and there is potentially more creativity to be had than from a standard fixed screen.
To the right of said LCD is a selection of thumb-operated controls that will be immediately familiar to anyone who has handled a digital camera over the past 15 years. This includes the five pence piece sized shooting mode dial, with intelligent Auto (iAuto) and Program mode settings, sitting alongside a panorama option that automatically stitches together elongated shots in-camera, selectable scene modes, a dedicated Super Macro mode, plus sports and Art Filter digital effects modes; so far, so Olympus.
Playing with the Olympus TG-860 in the depths of an English winter, we were only able to test its waterproofing qualities when using it in the driving rain, and subsequently dunking it underwater in the bathroom, holding it under a running tap with the camera activated and its back screen visible. Happily the Olympus’ screen was still working after the fact, as was the camera itself. Though there were a couple of tiny beads of moisture around the seal, no droplets had made contact with any sensitive inner workings. What’s more, water droplets simply run off the camera’s fascia and lens, quickly leaving both facets clear and dry. We look forward to taking the camera on an extended test diving in the Caribbean …at a later date.

Wifi and GPS are new and the TG860 is even more rugged than its predecessor, being waterproof down to 15 metres compared to 10 metres for the TG850 iHS. There are also some new customisable buttons, enhanced continuous shooting options and new shooting modes.
Aside from the fact that it lacks RAW and costs around 20 percent less, what sets the TG860 apart from its more expensive stablemate, the TOUGH TG4, is primarily its super-wide angle lens and forward-facing screen which makes it much better suited for sports and action selfies. But it’s not limited to selfies and in some respects the screen and lens make it better suited to all kinds of outdoor photography. In my review I’ve tested and compared it to the TG4 as well as Nikon’s premium rugged waterproof compact the COOLPIX AW130. Read on to find out which is the best rugged water-proof compact for your kind of outdoor photography.

Our review unit is dark gray and has exposed bolts on the front to enhance the rugged look (they’re just there for show). On the right-hand grip is a red-dot “Face” button that lets you take selfies when using the tilt-screen LCD. Also on the front are a flash, LED/autofocus illuminator, and the lens. This non-extending glass has a 5x optical zoom with a 35mm range of a very wide 21mm to 105mm. It’s not the brightest lens available with apertures of f/3.5 (wide) to f/5.7 (tele). In other words, you’ll need outdoor light for best results and the flash for indoor subjects. For the types of activities we imagine people would use this camera for, abundant natural light shouldn’t be an issue. (Olympus has the much more expensive TG-4, at $379, with a 4x optical zoom and a bright lens with an f/2.0 aperture. Since it takes RAW files, it’s targeted toward those who have experience with post-editing software.)
The 3-inch LCD screen covers nearly the entire back, with a 920K-dot resolution – an improvement over the 460K-dot resolution in the TG-860, and even the TG-4 and TG-3. The screen also flips up 180-degrees into aforementioned selfie position.
The bright Arizona summer sunshine overpowered the LCD, even when brightness level is cranked all the way up. During testing there were times when the screen was difficult to view, forcing us to look at it from different angles. And, although the 3-inch screen may be rated 920K dots, it’s not the sharpest we’ve tested.
When we reviewed shots on the LCD, we were initially disappointed due to the aforementioned screen quality. That thinking changed when we reviewed the stills on a 27-inch monitor – image quality was quite good with accurate colors and sharpness and detail that were a pleasure to see. The camera has built-in lens-shift image stabilization that helps cut down on blur. Now this was in bright sunlight, the expected place an outdoors camera is supposed to be used.
One of the coolest features of the TG-870 – and any other tough camera – is the fact it’s waterproof, making it great for the pool or any other water-related activity that would kill a smartphone or traditional compact. We took the Stylus into a pool and shot a number of still-life images using one of the underwater scene settings. The stills were excellent and sharp. You can dive into deeper water with the camera, but it gets darker the deeper you go, and, as mentioned, low light isn’t the camera’s strong point.

Kilogram-force (kgf) is the unit for measuring force exerted on an object. When the LCD monitor is closed, according to tests performed under our in-house method
The Tough series is a model equipped with the waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, freezeproof, and crushproof performance, pursuing the concept of worry-free shooting underwater, on snowy mountains, and other harsh environments that other cameras could not endure. The OLYMPUS STYLUS TG-850 Tough is highly-acclaimed for its ability to capture not only everyday scenes but also under severe environments. Its successor model, the OLYMPUS STYLUS TG-860 Tough is the perfect camera for outdoor scenes with waterproof performance up to 15m, features such as Wi-Fi and GPS, and a variety of shooing functions.
1.Five main Tough capabilities: Waterproof up to 15 m*1, dustproof*2, shockproof up to 2.1m*3, freezeproof up to -10°C*4, and crushproof up to 100kgf*5
With improvements to the waterproof sealing mechanisms, waterproof up to 15m*1 is achieved on the OLYMPUS STYLUS TG-860 Tough. Shock-absorbing mechanisms with shock-absorbing materials placed inside the camera, and a double chassis construction create shockproof performance for drops from a height of up to 2.1m*3, and toughness that can withstand crushing up to 100 kgf*5. In addition to the capability to withstand up to -10°C*4 in low temperature environments, a dustproof*2 design is used which brings out the true value of this camera when used in punishing environments such as underwater, on mountains, rocky slopes, etc., where other digital devices fear to tread.
This camera is equipped with a 180° tilting LCD monitor for shooting at any angle. The new Face button on the front of the camera can be used as a shutter release button. With a design that lets user easily shoot with the Face button or shutter release button, user can hold the camera with either hand. Invert display setting is also included which detect the camera"s direction and LCD position, and automatically switches the display. When used together with the Face button on the front of the camera, freedom of shooting from high and low angles is possible in a way never before available on any camera. Additionally, Self Portrait mode is now included on the mode dial. When this mode is selected, the camera automatically adjusts the focus on the person holding it, and adjusts the brightness of the AF Illuminator. Selfies are easy with the easy-to-see self timer and countdown display on the LCD monitor.
Superb optical technology cultivated over many years is crystallized in Olympus TG-860 Tough, for an extremely rare ultra wide-angle 21mm*6, 5x zoom lens, among compact cameras. The waterproof, splashproof ultra wide-angle zoom lens is not only great for capturing wide-open landscapes such as the mountains and seaside, but is also advantageous in cramped spaces where the photographer may hesitate to step back. This lens also compensates for distortion that easily occurs around the edges of images captured on a wide-angle lens. For example, when taking a selfies, the camera compensates for distortion of faces in the corners of shots that causes an unnatural look in images. While achieving the ultra wide-angle lens, the camera is kept compact with a new prism possessing a high refractive index, and Super HR lenses.
Even when using the silicone jacket, the Face button on the front of the camera, the tripod baseplate on the bottom and sides, and the tilting LCD monitor can be used as usual.
The rugged Olympus TG-870 is waterproof down to 50 feet (15m), shockproof from 7 feet (2.1m), crushproof up to 220 pounds (100kgf), freezeproof down to 14° F (-10°C) and dustproof; all identical ratings to its predecessor.
And it still features a rare (for a rugged camera) hinged LCD like its predecessor, but the 3-inch screen"s resolution has been doubled from 460K to 920K-dots, and Olympus says brightness has also been increased by about ten percent, for improved visibility in sunlight and underwater. Like its predecessor"s, the LCD is capable of flipping up all the way to 180 degrees and when combined with the customizable button on the front of the camera, which can serve as a second shutter release, the TG-870 makes it easy to take selfies and low-angle shots, as well as high-angle shots by shooting upside down (an orientation sensor keeps the preview image upright). As with the TG-860, it’s worth noting the rugged aspect of the camera only remains intact when the screen is closed against the camera.
