From superior versatility to dynamic messaging to more integrated communication, the advantages associated with digital signage are numerous.Understanding the fundamental digital signage costs is critical to making the right purchase decision.

In fact, the worldwidedigital sign market is expected to expand to $31.7 billionby 2025 with a CAGR of 8%. Plus, in terms of shipments, growth is anticipated to reach 6.45 million units by 2025.

Although this robust activity demonstrates the well-known value of digital signs, companies still want to know about the cost of digital signage. Since we’re talking about modern technology tools, the cost factor includes hardware, installation, software, tech support, and more.

Some companies might wonder about the average cost for digital signage, but averages can be deceiving. A better way to look at it is based on your signage needs and the different options available.

In this article, we’ll break down digital signage cost categories one by one. This will help you make more informed investment decisions to maximize value.

Some buyers have a misconception about what digital signage actually is. They believe digital signs are nothing more than large TVs or computer monitors. The reality is that digital signs are a specialized type of technology. They are designed for a specific purpose, which is, to improve communication for an organization or brand.

It is tempting to use free software to power digital signs. However, if the software is difficult to use or understand, it might end up consuming valuable IT resources. Also, free software often comes with fewer features which can impact how well the configuration can be set to meet your needs.

Remember, a poor-quality display may make images and text appear blurred or fuzzy. Screens can have a lot of glare. This can affect the readability of the screen. Instead of focusing only on low cost, it’s better to choose the package that gives you the most value while fitting within your budget.

Obviously, the digital signage display screen is the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to digital sign pricing. What should you consider when looking at digital displays and digital signage display prices?

A household smart TV model will be less expensive compared to a commercial-grade display. Still, there are some things to keep in mind when comparing consumer vs. commercial products.

Your signage will likely see heavy use, and commercial models are designed to be more durable. Plus, commercial displays come with longer warranties. Warranties are important since they are a hedge to cover against unforeseen equipment failure repair costs.

Finally, commercial displays usually have more processing power, which is important for more advanced messaging. This can impact how well your signage gets the message across, especially if you plan to use a lot of video imaging.

Where the screen will be placed as well as potential viewing angles are important. The display size depends largely on the screen location. You want it large enough to ensure visibility, but the display should also blend in well with the surroundings. For high-impact signage, you may even opt for a full wall-sized screen.

Digital Signage Display Price: Options to ConsiderTCL 65″ 6-Series 4K Roku Smart TV – This model offers superior 4K Ultra HD picture clarity combined with Dolby Vision HDR (High Dynamic Range) for crisp, clear images largely thanks to mini-LED and Quantum light technology. Price = $1,299.

Samsung QET Series 75″ (Commercial Grade) – Features eye-catching UHD resolution Crystal Display with ultra slim design. Includes MagicINFO Lite digital signage software. This display has a 3-year onsite warranty. It is built to operate 16 hours a day and 7 days a week. Price = $2,250.

The type of digital signage you implement will depend on your needs and objectives. Features such as touch screens and full-wall-sized displays are available. These designs come at a higher cost. If a high impact is what you want, then it might be worth looking into one of these more unique options.

All digital signage requires a digital signage media player to stream content. Memory, processing speed, and different features come with each player. This is important to consider when deciding on a media player as all these factors can be impacted by your signage. Are low-cost digital signage media players worth it? It depends. Remember, the cost can influence performance. Media players are essentially computers designed for digital displays.

The player might be built into the unit, on more advanced display screens. Also, like displays, commercial-grade players are built for long play times and come with extended warranties.

Digital Signage Player PriceNVIDIA SHIELD Android TV Pro 4K– This HDR Streaming Media Player features High Performance Dolby Vision, 3GB RAM, 2x USB. Price = $199.99

As you can see, the extra $127 for the AOPEN gives you quite a boost in performance, but the NVIDIA is no slouch, especially for the money. You should take into account the total number of digital signage displays you want/have.

Some players come pre-loaded with free digital signage software. This can reduce the cost of purchasing each component separately. Digital signage software bundles make it easier to get your digital signage displays up and running.

A mini-computer can be mounted near or on the back of your digital sign display. Two advantages of mini-PCs are its versatility and is customizable. Some mini-PCs are very small and noiseless. So, if your needs are more complex, such as with advanced messaging, multimedia, or marketing integration, you may want to consider this alternative. These units can run from basic $100 models to powerful mini-PCs like theMSI MPG Trident 3, which retails at $1,399.

It’s difficult to quantify display mount costs as it depends largely on where the signage will be placed. For example, for displays mounted higher up on the wall, an angled mount will be needed. In other cases, requirements maybe include movable mounts with hinged arms.

In every case, it makes sense to go with high quality. Plus, you’ll want to choose a mount that is as low profile as possible. In conclusion, the signage should get the attention, not a big, bulky mount.

Digital signage mounts can cost anywhere from $50 to $350+. Meanwhile, digital signage cabling should use high-grade cables, which are more durable and improve transmission speed. A 4K Displayport to HDMI Cable costs about $13 for 6 feet of cable.

Labor costs may vary widely by region and provider. Plus, there’s a huge difference between installing a simple 55’ wall-mounted display vs. an entire wall-sized screen. A simple single screen installation will cost around $200. For larger projects, the price can vary significantly so it pays to get two or three price estimates. Also, make sure your installer has digital sign installation experience since factors such as wiring, mounting, and screen angles should be considered.

There are several advantages to cloud-based software. Maintenance and updates are included in the cost, which is a huge benefit. Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is another name for cloud-based software. Installing dynamic digital signage software on your own requires some tech expertise, plus you have to do all the troubleshooting on your own.  In both cases, there may be some IT training involved. For SaaS options, training will be minimal since backend upkeep is done by the provider. If you purchase and install the software yourself, you will have to manage in-house training as well.

Provisioning is the process of connecting and configuring your displays and players so that they can be used for digital signage purposes. This process requires specific expertise in the digital signage field. So unless you have the right tech staff, you’ll probably want to outsource this job.

Cost issues such as Internet access and networking all come into play at this level. A ballpark figure for provisioning costs maybe $250-$350 per display in addition to any broadband access costs. Other issues to consider here are networking and IT requirements. This will vary depending on what content you intend to stream and how it will be integrated with your communications systems. Finally, theADA signage requirementsshould be kept in mind as regulations continue to become more stringent as time goes on.

This might be the most variable cost of signage factor of all since it totally depends on the digital signage content you plan to transmit on your digital signs. For example, static text vs. fully interactive touchscreen content will have a huge price difference. Content creation costs should be included in the monthly budget for your overall digital signage campaign costs. Start-up and installation costs are not included or part of your content costs.

The content you choose on your information screens must make sense and align precisely with your brand and the message you want to transmit. For example, wayfinding on a college campus shouldn’t get mixed up with menu choices for lunch. The reality is that an entire content creation team, calendar, and strategy should be deployed to get the most out of your signage. This implies weighing the costs of having the work done in-house, by freelancers, or through a professionally managed service/agency.

Every digital system will require maintenance and troubleshooting from time to time. Consequently, capable and experienced in-house IT teams might be able to handle this on their own. If not, it makes sense to outsource it. The advantage of outsourcing is that digital signage specialists know exactly how to approach a problem. They can fix issues faster, and in most cases, have a lower overall cost.

For digital church sign costs, digital menu board costs, or any other organization’s digital signage costs, it makes sense to consider depreciation.Depreciationis an accounting method of allocating the cost of a tangible or physical asset over its useful life or life expectancy. This method helps you cushion the economic impact of buying digital signs as well as taking into account the normal wear and tear of the hardware.

Depreciating digital signage assets helps companies earn revenue from an asset. You can do this while expending a portion of the signage cost each year the signs are in use. Especially for larger projects, if depreciation isn’t taken into account, it can significantly affect profits. Businesses can depreciate long-term assets for both tax and accounting purposes. For example, you can take a tax deduction for the cost of your signage fleet, thus reducing your taxable income.

Here’s a graphic representation of the costs (your costs may vary from this example depending on factors such as display size, hardware quality, labor costs, etc.):

The key here is to plan for this from the moment you install the technology, or even sooner. For instance, when purchasing, it makes sense to standardize (buy all the same model) if possible. This allows you to better predict the product lifecycle. Also, you might plan for a phased approach to refresh your hardware, perhaps starting with media players then later video displays in a stepwise fashion. As a rule of thumb, major pieces of technology usually last between 3-5 years. In addition, this varies depending on hours per week of use and environmental factors (outdoor vs. indoor, etc.).

It’s plain to see that digital signs are a business investment. However, the question remains: will your return on investment (ROI) be worth it? Our world increasingly uses visual methods of communication. The value of having signage that appropriately transmits your organization’s message has become more important than ever. Plus, digital signage offers a wide range of advantages, such as:Ability to adapt message & content quickly

In the end, each business must decide for itself if the advantages are worth the cost. In addition, with the right amount of planning, nearly any organization can find a digital sign solution that fits their needs and budget.

Retailers and transit systems using digital signage are very common, and every day more and more campuses, government institutions and corporations are finding their own ways to benefit from this increasingly affordable technology.

Our digital sign software can be used in any environment… lobbies and reception areas, student lounges, cafeterias, break rooms, call centers, elevator banks, factory floors, meeting rooms…virtually any space, campus, or in venues across the globe – all managed from a central source.

Companies use digital signage to welcome visitors, show meeting schedules, or tell employees about progress to goals. Maybe students are reminded that registration ends tomorrow or directed to interactive wayfinding on touchscreens to find their way around campus. As the day comes to a close, screens in your facility might show local weather and traffic so that people can plan their commutes. What you show is really only limited by what you can imagine and create.

To communicate with people, you have to get their attention. Watching TV and using computers has trained us to look at screens for information, so digital signage is a natural choice for reaching large audiences. It’s also better than email, printed posters, and bulletin boards because:

Digital signage not only informs and engages more people through creative presentation, but also reaches them instantly and reliably – and messages can be updated or retired in real-time. It’s a modern approach to organizational communications that draws in viewers with bright, animated graphics and interactivity.

Visix digital signage software allows you to create, import and manage messages, alerts and media; schedule your messages to appear on the screens that you select; and deliver them to your audience in just minutes.

We believe in making digital signage as easy as possible for our clients. One of the ways we do this is by providing browser-based software. This means that our content management software lives on one machine that’s on your network or the web, so that more people can access it for faster, easier communications.

AxisTV Signage Suite lets you create beautiful content within the application or leverage existing media and skill sets by importing popular file formats:

You can also use interactive digital signage for wayfinding maps and directories, menu boards, queuing systems, donor boards and more. If you need assistance creating or supplementing your content to keep communications fresh, our digital signage content designers can help.

Absolutely! You can override all screens manually using our Alert Management System’s web interface, or via CAP-compliant triggers. We support integration with Rave Mobile, Alertus, Singlewire, e2campus and other mass notification systems.

The short answer is no, there is no limit. The number of displays you can support is only limited by the software application you purchase and the number of media players you use.

Our AxisTV Signage Suite digital signage software is available with a variety of licenses, depending on the number of users and players you will have. And because all of our architecture is scalable, it’s easy to expand – simply purchase what you need to start and upgrade as you grow.

The output of any media player can be distributed to practically any number of displays through signal distribution amplifiers, switchers, routers, transmitters and receivers, or cable systems. Because our software is browser-based, as many people as you want can create and manage content.

We work with a select group of digital signage technology firms and AV/IT integrators to manage integrated projects that marry our technologies with other manufactured devices and provide superior integration services. If you need help with systems integration, we can recommend a partner in your area.

Updating your Visix digital signage applications to a more current versioncan improve system performance, expand functionality and provide you with new tools to reach your audience. We are committed to three to four enhancement and/or feature releases every twelve months, and updating is easy with downloadable files and help from our support team.

The most affordable way to ensure you always have the latest version of our digital signage software is to make a small investment in a Software Support & Maintenance Subscription. This provides priority support, free software updates and a host of other benefits at a fraction of the cost of competitor’s support agreements.

The University of Illinois Springfield Student Union prominently features a 9-screen video display wall, located outside of the Student Leadership Center.

The video wall is administered and programmed by the University’s Marketing Department. The goal of the video wall is to communicate with students and university employees about campus events and important university and system-level announcements, as well as highlight the achievements of our students, faculty and staff. The wall is also a tool to communicate with external visitors about the university and its mission. Messages, images, videos and events, carefully chosen and displayed on the video wall correlate directly to those goals.

UIS faculty, staff and student groups may inquire about displaying an image on the video wall, but requests are considered on an individual basis, and UIS Campus Relations has the right to reject the submission for any reason. Requests can be made to Heath Bruce, Assistant Director of Marketing, at hbruc3@uis.edu.

UIS student groups that would like to promote an event in a digital format are encouraged to submit information and a high resolution image for the campus relations digital signs, in accordance with these policies. Images must be created in 1920×1080 pixels with 96 DPI. Images stretched to meet those criteria will appear grainy and distorted and will be rejected. Please submit video wall images in the proper size in a .jpg, .psd or Adobe Acrobat format.

We encourage those with limited experience with graphic design to take advantage of the templates being designed by the Campus Relations Department. They will allow you to simply drop your content into a pre-designed format.

Over the course of the past few decades, many schools have begun transitioning from printed to digital signage on their campuses. And, there are many other schools that are considering making this switch as well. In this article, we will talk about some of the big considerations in upgrading your school to digital signage, including design, content, and location of each of your signs. We will also talk about important things like ADA compliance and government funding. For now, let’s get into the reasons why most schools are choosing to make this transition.

Draw attention with colorful, moving graphics. Younger generations – the bulk of school attendees today – are especially inclined to engage with information in digital form.

With printed signs, making edits means designing and reprinting new signs – and all the costs associated with it. With digital signage, you can make those changes quickly and remotely, making it that much easier to get your message out.

Display real-time updates such as weather, alerts, navigation, events, and announcements across multiple platforms using a single data source. The information can be automated as well.

With added software, digital signs can track user interactions. This data can then be analyzed to improve user experience. Implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI) software can help to facilitate these changes in real time, such as moving popular searches near the top of a screen to make them more discoverable.

ADA guidelines for digital signage involve their positioning, location, incorporation of touch, and other capabilities. Some specific examples of ADA regulations for digital signage include:

To learn more about ADA compliance, visit the ADA website. It’s also an important conversation to have withyour digital signage supplierand/or signage integrator. They can help provide expert guidance and ensure your signs are accessible to everyone. These resources are critical not only in maintaining compliance, but also to truly maximize the effectiveness of your signage investment across as many people possible, which is the whole reason for signage in the first place!

A good portion of this grant was allocated to state and local governments. It gave many schools and universities additional funding to offset economic hardships brought on by the pandemic or to make necessary upgrades, such as upgrading signs to digital.

Most schools have certain common areas that get a lot of foot traffic: The entrance, the cafeteria, the lobby, the library, or the bookstore. These can be great places to install digital signage. Wherever you choose to install it, the key is tomake it visible, accessible, and legible to all.

Sign location and content go hand-in-hand. For example, you may want to share information about bookstore specials and sales on a display near the bookstore. Or, food prices and lunch specials on a cafeteria sign.

While some displays may be meant to run basic slideshows of images, others will probably be more interactive. A kiosk in an university parking lot, for example, should probably have higher functionality, such as the ability to search a directory or dial campus security.

Once you’ve identified all of the “functions” of your signage (i.e. touch integration, sound integration, screen size for viewing audience, power delivery, etc.), the actual “form” or shape of the display plays a large role in achieving your goals.

Wall-mounted or flush-mounted signageis relatively simple and can help anchor the display to a solid surface, preventing damage from the elements or other objects.

Some designs are very aesthetically pleasing, but not very realistic when it comes to withstanding vandalism or the cost to realistically operate a functional display. Others may work well enough, but are limiting in their simplicity and your business would benefit from upgrading to a more user-friendly model.

Therefore, you’ll want tostrategize what mounting system and enclosureis best for your sign and its location, as these options can vary significantly in design, functionality, and price. Again, your display manufacturer and/or integrator should be able to help you find the right solution for your needs and ensure everything meets ADA standards, no matter which option you choose.

Investing in digital signage for your school or university will provide many benefits both now and to come. As you navigate your upgrade, we hope these tips we shared will help make the process smooth sailing, so you can move on to the next upgrade!

Before you go, we’d love to share our unique type of digital signage that is perfect for schools and universities trying to lead by example in the push for eco-friendly practices.

Of course this is largely in part due to funding issues. But there is a relatively simple – and affordable – way to enhance the student experience and build upon a college campus’ digital transformation strategy: digital signage. (Check out what one of our educational customers has to say about us here).

Digital signage is not solely reserved for the likes of digital menu boards and data dashboards. With an effective strategy, college campuses and other educational institutions can use digital signage for a variety of purposes, from broadcasting sporting fixtures to wayfinding. Think of it like your new favorite member of staff.

All you need is some consumer-grade hardware (like the affordable Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K), screens and a cloud-based digital signage software solution: ScreenCloud. For more on the technical setup of digital signage, check out our guide on digital signage for schools.

Digital signage is the future of the digital education space. Put (incredibly) simply, it replaces the need for things like physical noticeboards (as well as numerous other manual / physical processes).

This is one of the main benefits: you can show your content anywhere. And you can update it from anywhere too; you could be based in one building – or even at home – and make content updates that would show instantly across your screens on campus. This is perfect for things like emergency announcements or room changes.

Love it or loathe it, you can’t escape social media. However, it is highly relatable and can present content in a familiar – and visual – way. With app integrations like Walls.io or Taggbox you can aggregate all of your social channels, including user-generated content (i.e. posts from students), and display this across your digital signage playlists. This content then updates itself in real-time, and you can schedule for it to show at specific times.

Digital signage can also help students stay engaged with the news and world events outside of the college ‘bubble’. With ScreenCloud you can embed a news app or run a news ticker along the bottom of your screen while your other content is running.

Digital signage is brilliant for managing room bookings. Show meeting schedules in advance and manage timings from afar by either updating content in real-time, or scheduling content in advance. Have a countdown timer to the next meeting, or even broadcast the meeting live to other screens for those who cannot attend.

We can’t take credit for this one. One of our education customers told us that their school gym was only used around college hours, sitting empty and unused at the weekend. Using digital signage, they set up a Twitter feed and a display that showed the empty slots when the gym wasn’t being used. This was seen by the public and students, so it became easy to rent out the space.

For the cafes and bars on campus a digital menu board could help you sell more products and provide special or seasonal offers.Digital menu boards can be updated instantly to show specials, menu changes and even allergen information. Schedule content to show breakfast, lunch and dinner menus too, and even integrate a social media feed to see what your students are eating.

Another great source of digital signage content is using your own website. Create a playlist of your webpages to highlight school events, news and general information. For open days or inductions this is an easy source of information to upload, using our ‘add Web Site’ URL drop-in feature.

OK, so we don’t really want to replace the noticeboard. But we have made it digital. With our Noticeboard app you can display content directly on ScreenCloud-enabled screens. Update and upload content in real-time, like posters made with apps like Canvas.

With easy access to Google Slides you can create presentations online or upload ones you already have, ready to share on your digital screens. Alternatively, you can live-stream your presentation across your screens, desktop and on mobile using ScreenCloud Broadcast.

Are you thinking about purchasing digital signage? If you’re a business owner, digital signage is a valuable marketing asset for attracting and connecting with potential customers. Diverse industries are investing indigital signage solutions to enhance their customer experience and get their message across to the people that matter most to their business. But how much does digital signage actually cost? Here, we’ll help you identify all the costs involved with adopting digital signage.

Digital signage provides specific technology that improves communications, marketing, and brand awareness by displaying preselected content on screens such as images, videos, audio, and other engaging information. From improving internal communications in offices with data dashboards displaying real-time analytics to using digital signage screens to showcase amenities and onsite services in hotels, digital signage has the versatility to solve multiple business goals. The technology is easy to use but is entirely personalized in terms of rollout and what content you want to display. Before making a decision to invest, you can take advantage of thefree demos that many vendors provide to see how you can easily create, manage and schedule great multimedia displays for reaching your target audience.

Initial costs will entail the acquisition of equipment, software, and services. However, to acquire the most accurate costs for investing in digital signage, business owners must also consider fees for:

With a myriad of options up for grabs, shopping for TV screens and monitors for digital signage can be overwhelming. Whether it’s a digital signage menu board or a seasonal promotion, the main priority with digital signage screens is for the customer to be able to clearly see your content.

When searching for the best TV screen for your digital signage display, we recommend investing in high-definition hardware from a trusted brand. This can ensure the quality and effectiveness of your content.

Yodeck supports both commercial and consumer TV screens, as well as the best brands. These includeSamsung,NEC, LG, PCL, Panasonic, High Sense, and Phillips.

For digital signage, the setup cost depends on the number of screens you decide to deploy. Overall, commercial-grade displays offer more durable hardware compared to consumer-grade screens built for use in a typical home setting. They provide more inputs for external device connection, with the ability to operate 24/7.

After screen selection, the media player needs to be considered. A digital signage player, also referred to as a “media player,” is a small device that is used to broadcast content on any digital display system. Media players are powered by digital signage software. Therefore, it’s important to check that the player will be compatible with the software best suited for your business requirements.

Yodeck’s plug-and-play device, the ‘Yodeck Player,’ pairs with/runs on theRaspberry Pi, a high-performing and extremely affordable player. Yodeck sends the players for free with an annual subscription, no matter how many screens you employ.

Once the hardware is selected, there are installation costs to consider. This can vary depending on the hardware/screens (indoor/outdoor) placement and screen size. Yodeck doesn’t charge any installation costs as it’s a plug-and-play solution, with HTML cable to TV screen setup.

Although digital signage software is low maintenance, professional technical support and regular system upgrades are required. Costs for this can be part of a spending plan for digital signage. Some providers, such as Yodeck, offer support free of charge and release software updates every six weeks.

Digital signage software displays multimedia content on screens through a remotely managed CMS system. For digital signage software, there are two main licensing models:

It’s important to consider any third-party software you may want to license and integrate with your digital signage software, such as project tracking tools, outside of freewidgets that can be used to display live data, social media, business analytics, news feeds, and more.

Digital signage isn’t super technical. There are a ton of tools that help with the tricky bits, like creating content, so it really is a job that anyone can do. Some business owners may choose to manage content through existing employees. Meanwhile, others may hire an agency or freelance professional to handle their content management.

With Yodeck’s digital signage solution, non-tech savvy users can configure content on a TV screen, and there are no extra costs required for content management. We provide free template layouts to upload and use with any type of content (docs, widgets, videos, audio, etc.) and deliver online video guides and tutorials.

This process requires specific expertise in the digital signage field. For this reason, unless you have the right tech staff, you’ll probably want to outsource this job, and factor costs for it into your TCO for digital signage budget. Some providers, like Yodeck, provide all the provisioning and pre-configuration, with no actions required by the end-user.

The main outgoings for digital signage are high-quality digital screens, a media player, and digital signage software. Every business has different requirements for digital signage which will determine the total cost of ownership and the most suitable licensing model to go for.

Purchasing digital signage software with a perpetual license may be a cost-effective way to obtain (own the software) for some companies. Even so, over time, there will be a smaller incremental fee to pay for updates and maintenance.

The lowest cost of acquisition shouldn’t necessarily be a goal for acquiring a digital signage solution. Integrating the right hardware and software to meet your digital signage objectives can lower ongoing operations costs.

Remember, when making a digital signage cost breakdown, it is important to review the post-acquisition costs. These ‘hidden costs’ include content management, IT support, ongoing software costs, servicing, and product upgrades/replacements.

Overall, your signage needs will determine the digital signage cost, whether it’s a digital signage menu board or signage screens in shop windows to increase in-store footfall. Digital signage is adaptable, highly engaging, and affordable for businesses of all sizes. Start with afree plan to try it for yourself!

Digital signage attracts 400% more views than static signs. In July 2021, a 3D digital billboard caught so much attention it made international news. A 4K digital display in Tokyo showcased a giant, realistic-looking cat looming over the Shinjuku district.

Videos of the billboard went viral. The animation was so popular, Cross Space began live-streaming it full-time. Cross Space is one of two companies that teamed up to create unique digital signage.

You may not need millions of international viewers. Yet, even for companies with narrower goals, digital signage solves problems. It can enhance a customer’s experience when shopping, traveling, or even seeking medical care.

You can only display one message per banner. You accumulate costs the more banners you print. And if you have one prime location, you can only put one message there, rather than display an array of messages throughout an hour.

Moreover, static signs can’t incorporate sound or movement. Digital signage solutions break free from these limits. These solutions empower precisely, targeted messaging with a wide range of tools. Can they work for you?

Digital signage solutions are combined with display screens, media players, and software. These solutions show people video and audio information at a specific, physical location.

A complete digital signage solution is a mix of hardware and software. It works together to perform multimedia content but with a far greater set of digital technology. It can display what you want, and where you want it, as it’s continually updated.

Contemporary digital signage evolved from digital display marketing. Display marketing, or digital display advertising, is an umbrella term for advertisements on websites and apps.

Digital signage solutions take digital display marketing from the small screen to a big one. It takes unique graphics and content and serves them directly to a single digital billboard. Or, it sends the information to multiple, interconnected digital displays.

Digital signage solutions have grown beyond their origins. These solutions can be ads, but they don’t have to be. Digital signage can inform or entertain as well as advertising.

Some manufacturers use digital signage to communicate with employees on the floor. Hospital administrators use digital signage to relay messages to specific buildings on the campus.

And music festivals have used these solutions to display social media walls. These walls replay highlights and capture audience reactions. They’re updated with every set–and, sometimes, with every song.

Digital signs display pre-selected content in a physical location. Typically, this is a digital billboard outside or a sign outside a building. Some people set up digital signs in building interiors.

These components connect to form an effective system. If you’re considering using a digital signage solution for your business, learn the function of each part.

Every part of a digital signage solution plays a critical role when you deliver a message. No component is one-size-fits-all. Instead, you have options to choose either one or two.

Digital signage displays are much larger than typical screens. Most of these displays are, at minimum, forty-eight inches. That’s four feet across, diagonally.

Though there is various form factor display to showcase digital signage content, for example, traditional LED, projector, and LCD screens, from the display technology evolution, the LCD screens have been playing a vital part for the digital signage solutions.

Digital signage displays might be LED screens, LCD screens, or projections. LED displays are flat panels of light-emitting diodes. Designers arrange these small lights in a matrix.

The matrix of light acts like an array of pixels on a desktop screen. You can see LED screens clearly outdoors, even in direct sunlight. Light diodes are bright enough that the sun’s glare doesn’t affect the image.

LCD screens are liquid crystal displays. Liquid crystals are unique substances that have some traits of solid crystal compounds, and other properties of liquids.

The molecules in a liquid crystal are arranged in a crystalline structure. The fluid properties of the crystals refract light. LCD screens use a backlight to display images.

Today, there are very few digital signage displays that are solely LED. Due to the scientific fact that LED screens are more power-efficient to produce light, they are usually used for outdoor large format displays over 100 inches. But, LED screens are way too expensive and unaffordable for most businesses.

LED screens and LCD screens both have advantages and drawbacks. Fortunately, LED may be used in combination with LCD technology. LED matrices sometimes provide backlighting for LCD screens. These combination screens are typically just called “LCD.” In retailing or semi-outdoor environments, LCD screens are the most common options.

Digital signage is often installed in the semi-outdoor environment, such as retail stores, restaurants, or public areas. And sometimes, this type of display needs to be able to playback content for an extended or non-stop period. The reliability of the commercial display is the most crucial factor known for its 24/7 operation, high brightness, portrait and landscape mode, etc.

Some commercial-grade displays are also all-in-one solutions. This means that they’re screens that also encompass computing powering with a System-on-Chip (SoC) technology, to run apps, streaming video, etc, there is also an operating system (OS) that enables a computer’s key processes. It empowers functions like scheduling tasks, executing instructions on apps, and managing the machine’s memory.

Different all-in-one displays will have different operating systems. Some OS is open-source, while others are proprietary. When you buy a digital signage system with a proprietary OS, you get built-in apps with useable interfaces.

Proprietary OS might prevent you from using third-party software. If you want to use third-party apps to display your imagery, you’ll need an open-source OS. Linux, Windows, and Android are all open-source operating systems.

Non-SoC displays can also be a good choice. These displays still offer USB video playback. They have basic functions like scheduling and multi-media players.

These displays don’t have as much computing power. Fortunately, that’s reflected in the cost. Non-SoC commercial-grade displays are cost-effective solutions.

To use a non-SoC display, create graphics on a different device. Save them to a USB, an external media player, or a laptop. Connect that hardware to the display with a cable. Then, stream your slides or videos. This is the most popular budget solution.

Currently, manufacturers sell most Smart TVs to consumers, not businesses. Yet, they’re adopted for digital signage solutions because of the friendly price.

When it comes to digital signage solutions, Smart TV displays have a lot to offer. They already have the infrastructure and operating system to receive localized broadcasts. They can also display information from apps.

Smart TVs are user-friendly. They’re also relatively cost-effective compared to other options. Unfortunately, Smart TVs are not a good signage solution outside. The screens are not bright enough to be clearly visible in sunlight.

Make the information’s route to the Smart TV as direct as possible. Smart TV displays work best over short distances. Moreover, most Smart TVs are not weatherized and unable to operate for a long time due to image retention issues.

In 2016-2017, restaurants introduced touch screen menus. Diners could place orders directly from a digital menu, without saying a word. The new option created headline-making controversy.

Despite warnings that touch screen ordering would “change how we eat forever,” many of us warmed to the technology. Now, interactive displays give many signage options to businesses.

Developers wire touch screen displays to respond by touch. Previously, these displays were only available to companies who could afford to develop custom interfaces and program interactive creatives.

SoC technology makes touch screen displays more accessible. HTML5 framework–the same code that empowers clickable mobile apps–connects with displays that include built-in media players.

But, innovations have improved the brightness of outdoor touch screen displays. Some bright touch screen displays combine LCD and LED display technology.

Many touchscreen display options encompass a media player. Others enable you to design a custom digital signage system with the media player you prefer.

Digital signage players typically transmit content to multiple recipient displays. Screens in a hospital campus, conference center, and airport use this setup.

These media players connect to your signage system with cables. They can send content via HDMI, VGA, DVI, composite, or USB cables. Different players will indicate which cables they use.

Digital signage media players often have low bandwidth requirements. So, these players can receive content using Wi-Fi, multicast routing, or local networks. But, they cannot send content wirelessly.

Media players’ storage capacity varies. Low-end players can store 8GB of content. The highest-end players can store up to 2TB of content. You may choose to store content online instead. If you store signage content online, that’s cloud storage.

Digital signage solutions send, receive, and alter the content. To manage the content, you’ll need a content management
