Apple"s newly released Thunderbolt Display sports an LG display with the same model number found in the 27-inch iMac released in 2009, a teardown of the screen has found.

The new display, powered by Apple and Intel"s Thunderbolt technology, was disassembled this week by iFixit. They found that the LG display is model number "LM270WQ1," matching the previous iMac as well as the screen found in Dell"s competing UltraSharp U2711 27-inch monitor.

However, Apple"s display uses LED backlights for better picture quality and lower power consumption, as opposed to the cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) found on Dell"s screen. In addition, the Dell display is matte, while Apple"s is glossy.

The solutions provider also noted that Apple"s screen has a 12 millisecond response time and 17.7 million colors, while Dell"s competing panel offers an advertised 6 millisecond response time and 1.07 billion colors.

iFixit found that the glass front of the new Thunderbolt Display can be removed with "heavy duty suction cups," just like with Apple"s iMac lineup. The LCD screen sports a resolution of 2,560-by-1,440 pixels.

"The fan is easily removed by simply detaching a couple of connectors and unfastening a few screws," they said. "Apple has, as usual, chosen to go with a large, brushless fan to keep the colossal Thunderbolt Display cool and quiet."

Inside the display, iFixit found a plethora of chips, causing them to remark that "it"s hard to believe there"s no computer inside." The screen includes a built-in FaceTime HD video camera, 2.1 speaker system, integrated MagSafe charger, three USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 800 port, one Gigabit Ethernet port, and a Thunderbolt port for daisy chaining up to five additional Thunderbolt devices.

The teardown also discovered that the speakers inside the Thunderbolt Display are 49 watts with a miniature subwoofer. In addition, the Flextronics power supply is said to provide 250 watts of maximum continuous power.

As Apple mainly relies on Samsung and LG to manufacture its OLED panels for the iPhone, another Chinese factory wants a piece of Cupertino’s company money. As reported by

CSOT, together with Apple, first review the OLED panel produced from its T4 factory at Wuhan, China, sources said. The factory is designed to house three phases for a total capacity of 45,000 substrates per month. Two phases are currently live.

As of now, the Chinese company had supplied OLED panels for Samsung’s Galaxy M models in 2021. CSOT will also supply OLED panels for Galaxy A73 this year, The Elecreports.

The publication notes that it won’t be an easy path for CSOT, as China’s largest display panel maker BOE had failed “multiple times in Cupertino’s evaluation processes before finally being able to supply OLED panels to the iPhone maker.”

As 9to5Mac reported earlier this week, BOE, which currently manufactures OLED panels for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 – and will do the same for this year’s iPhone 14 – will try to supply displays for iPhone 15 Pro as well.

Although Apple has a very high standard on its supply chains, having more options is good. As The Elec notes, “Cupertino can also already use BOE to pressure Samsung Display and LG Display into lowering their unit prices. BOE’s OLED production capacity will also expand to 144,000 substrates per month by the end of this year or early next year, triple that of the maximum capacity at CSOT’s T4 factory.”

Last month, we told you that a bailout of Apple LCD supplier Japan Display was running into some trouble. The company, which produces the Liquid Retina display for the iPhone XR and LCD panels for older models, depends on Apple for 60.6% of its business. Because it was late to enter the OLED market, the company has been bleeding red ink. A Chinese state-run fund and a display producer in Taiwan were ready to inject cash into the company for nearly half of its equity. But that deal has been revised partially due to Japan Display"s worsening financial condition.

Today, Japan"s Asahi reports (via 9to5Google) that Apple will invest $100 million in Japan Display. As part of this bailout, Apple will reportedly increase orders to the supplier for LCD panels, taking business away from its China-based supply chain. The display producer was supposed to receive an injection of $650 million led by China’s state-backed Silk Road Fund and Taiwan panel maker TPK Holding Co.; Japan Display issued a release on Tuesday saying that it still expects to receive this cash infusion but from different investors. TPK and China have pulled out, and have been replaced by a Chinese investment firm called Harvest Technology and Hong Kong investment firm Oasis. Apple"s cash will help Japan Display in the short term while it waits to close on the $650 million restructuring that it still believes will happen. Harvest is expected to put up the equivalent of $500 million with another $150 million coming from Oasis

Besides developing its OLED line too late, Japan Display cut production of the iPhone XR display in December. And while it has continued to lose money, Apple apparently needs to keep the company afloat. Besides producing displays for the iPhone, it does make the OLED screens used on the Apple Watch. This isn"t the first time that the tech giant cut a check to its LCD supplier. Back in 2015, Apple fronted the outfit much of the $1.5 billion it cost to build a new LCD plant, although the timing was bad. Because smartphone manufacturers continue to migrate to OLED from LCD, that factory runs at half capacity. And Apple"s deal with Japan Display called for it to be reimbursed for the $1.5 billion through a percentage of each display sold. Earlier this year, a report noted that Apple is still owed most of the money that it laid out.

There is no disputing that Japan Display needs a bailout. In 2017, the company reported a loss of $260 million that ballooned into a huge $2.3 billion deficit last year. Not coincidentally, the first iPhone to sport an OLED panel (the Apple iPhone X) was launched late in 2017. Last year, Apple released three models and two of them feature OLED displays. We expect to see no changes to the displays for the 2019 iPhone models expected to be unveiled this September. Apple sources the OLED panels used for the iPhone from Samsung and LG. Next year"s iPhones are expected to stick to OLED displays although Japan Display will still be able to supply Apple with LCD panels for older models, just as it does now.

Investors applauded Apple"s move by lifting the price of Japan Display"s stock price by 39% in New York trading. The company was formed in 2011 when the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ) helped merge the display businesses belonging to Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi. Apple today announced that it is discontinuing its Thunderbolt Display, the large external display many use to connect to MacBooks or other Macs for extra screen real estate. This is very likely to fuel speculation (which has been ongoing) that Apple will soon launch a 4K or 5K version of the display.

The current Mac’s display is 5K and can be extended (in lower res) to the existing Thunderbolt Display, which runs at 2560×1440 — but I can tell you from personal experience that the difference in resolution sucks from a usability standpoint.

One of the technical hurdles has been which connector such a new display would use, or whether it would just feature an internal GPU. Current Thunderbolt tech may (or may not, depending on who you ask) work for it if you run cables in parallel, or customize it using a wireless chip method similar to Apple’s Lightning digital AV Adapter. It might make sense, for instance, to use an internal GPU to enable laptops and other Macs without a powerful graphics processor to use such a high-res display.

“We’re discontinuing the Apple Thunderbolt Display. It will be available through Apple.com, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers while supplies last. There are a number of great third-party options available for Mac users,” said an Apple spokesperson in a statement given to TechCrunch.

While Samsung will continue to supply approximately 80 per cent of iPhone displays, rumours claim that a little-known company called BOE looks set to become Apple’s second-largest OLED supplier. Not only is this a sign that Apple’s lowest-cost iPhone 12 model will likely make the leap from LCD to OLED this year, but it’s also a sign that Apple is looking to diversify which manufacturers it uses, and potentially looking to ready itself for a move into the display market itself.

You, like many of us when we first read the rumours, are probably wondering who the hell BOE is, and how it managed to score such a big deal despite its relatively unknown status. However, BOE is, in fact, the largest display manufacturer in China, supplying screens for smartphones, TVs and other electronic devices and home appliances.

The company, which was founded in Bejing in 1993 and acquired SK Hynix"s STN-LCD and OLED businesses back in 2001, is ranked second in the world when it comes to flexible OLED shipments, holding a market share of 11 per cent during the first quarter of this year. It, naturally, is still a long way behind market leader Samsung, which owned 81 per cent market share of the OLED market in the same quarter. Still, with a sizable chunk of the OLED market already under its belt, it perhaps won’t come as too much of a surprise – now, at least – that the firm already has some big-name allies.

BOE’s display technology is currently being utilised in Huawei"s most popular smartphone models, including the high-end P and Mate series, and it reportedly will manufacturer the palm-stretching screen set to appear on this year’s Huawei Mate 40.

BOE even provided the flexible OLED used in the foldable Huawei Mate X, which has proven way more reliable than Samsung’s flexible OLED efforts. Perhaps, then, it’s somewhat unsurprising that Samsung is reportedly considering using BOE screens for its future devices, likely at the expense of its own industry-dominating Samsung Display unit.

BOE’s surprising alliance with Apple isn’t the only time the two companies have worked together, either; the Chinese manufacturer already makes LCD screens for Apple"s older iPhones, and its tiny OLED panels are currently used in some Apple Watch models. It’s unclear how much BOE and Apple’s latest deal is worth, but it’s likely in the billions. According to online reports, Samsung’s deal with the iPhone maker is thought to be worth around $20 billion annually, so if BOE manages to secure 20 per cent of Apple’s display orders going forward, such a deal could be worth as much as $4bn.

Although BOE has managed to muscle its way into Apple’s exclusive list of OLED suppliers, and has invested heavily in facilities and equipment in order to meet the firm’s demands, the new partnership hasn’t got off to a flying start. According to reports, the company’s flexible OLED panels have not yet passed Apple’s final validation. This means, according to rumours, that BOE’s screens might not show up in the first batch of iPhone 12 models, and will instead start shipping on handsets at the beginning of 2021, with Apple instead set to re-increase its reliance on LG in the short term.

Scenarios like this, along with the fact that Apple is clearly looking to lessen its reliance on big-name display makers, makes us think that it won’t be long until the company ultimately stops relying on others altogether; after all, it’s no secret that Apple wants to control every aspect of its hardware development.

The display market could be Apple’s next target. Not only does the company already manufacturer screen technology in the form of its Pro Display XDR, but a recent Bloomberg report claims that Apple is “designing and producing its own device displays” and is making a “significant investment” in MicroLED panels. This technology utilises newer light-emitting compounds that make them brighter, thinner and less power-intense than the current OLED displays.

Repair guides can be hard to find. I"ve only seen guides for iMac but the general idea is the same. Remove the LCD assembly from the housing, remove the fixture tapes and side frames from the assembly, lift the panel and clean it. It seems that soft cloth is enough to clean the panels. Be aware of additional dust when wiping the panels and wipe gently, you may scarch the panel in the process if not careful enough. Make sure you seal the assembly well to prevent further dust.

It IS a very difficult repair, the assembly is very heavy, maybe more than 2/3 of the unit"s total weight, and it is a fragile piece of art. Several cables and sensors attach to the back side of the panel. You can easily damage them when lifting the LCD. There are many clips locking the frame. Quite tricky to remove. And at last the LCD driver board is connected to the panel by several ribbon cables. You must not tear any one of them or the entire unit is totaled. In conclusion, very challenging to do so.

His visit is likely aimed at winning supply orders for liquid crystal display (LCD) panels made by TCL subsidiary CSOT from the iPhone maker for use on its tablets and MacBooks, sources said.

BOE is already supplying LCD panels to Apple for MacBooks and iPads. According to analyst firm Omdia, the Chinese company is expected to be the largest supplier of LCD panels for iPads this year.

LG Display is expected to supply 14.8 million LCD panels to Apple for MacBooks this year, according to Omdia, making its share in this specific supply chain 55%.

The South Korean tech giant recently reduced its LCD panel orders from BOE because the latter refused to pay royalties. Samsung had recently demanded royalty payment from the Chinese panel maker for using its brand in marketing.

Chinese display manufacturer Beijing Oriental Electronics (BOE) could lose out on 30 million display orders for the upcoming iPhone 14 after it reportedly altered the design of the iPhone 13’s display to increase yield rate, or the production of non-defective products, according to a report from The Elec (via 9to5Mac).

Apple tasked BOE with making iPhone 13 displays last October, a short-lived deal that ended earlier this month when Apple reportedly caught BOE changing the circuit width of the iPhone 13’s display’s thin-film transistors without Apple’s knowledge. (Did they really think Apple wouldn’t notice?).

This decision could continue to haunt BOE, however, as Apple may take the company off the job of making the OLED display for the iPhone 14 as well. According to The Elec, BOE sent an executive to Apple’s Cupertino headquarters to explain the incident and says it didn’t receive an order to make iPhone 14 displays. Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 14 at an event this fall, but The Elec says production for its display could start as soon as next month.

In place of BOE, The Elec expects Apple to split the 30 million display order between LG Display and Samsung Display, its two primary display providers. Samsung will likely produce the 6.1 and 6.7-inch displays for the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro, while LG is set to make the 6.7-inch display for the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

According to MacRumors, BOE previously only manufactured screens for refurbished iPhones. Apple later hired the company to supply OLED displays for the new iPhone 12 in 2020, but its first batch of panels failed to pass Apple’s rigorous quality control tests. Since the beginning of this year, BOE’s output has also been affected by a display driver chip shortage.
