use a tft lcd on vw polo2003 gauge cluster in stock
I sourced the cluster from Vagtune, Cochin (link) for $583.16 (Rs. 41210) + Rs. 1890 (customs duties) + Rs. 826 (DTDC shipping charges). Sugesh Chandran, the owner was extremely helpful during the entire process and answered all my queries patiently. Since I was located at Surat and Sugesh at Cochin, I knew that I had to take the car to his shop to get it swapped. But Sugesh suggested a workaround - the cluster can be removed by the owner himself (or a garage technician at home) and can be shipped to him along with one of the keys so he can extract the PIN from the key and program the new cluster accordingly. I was a bit reluctant initially since shipping the cluster is a huge risk (damage/loss during transit) and if the programmed cluster wouldn’t work as desired (throwing up random errors), I would not be satisfied after having spent so much. However, Sugesh convinced me that this has been done before several times and the owners were satisfied.
He went on record suggesting that since I have a diesel car, the GTI cluster (meant for the TSI engine) would not come with the glow plug warning symbol and thus, will not flash this light during startup/ignition or in the event of a failure. It was a risk I was willing to take but in the event of a problem, the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) transmitted by the OBD II port to the smartphone application can be used to find this error. I went ahead, ordered the cluster and since the cluster was a part of a huge consignment originating from Hong Kong, I had no choice but to wait until it reached Sugesh at Cochin. I could also use my car until then. Few days later, Sugesh informed me that the shipment has landed and I could send my cluster anytime now. He had given me some pointers on how to get the cluster dismantled and even uploaded a video on YouTube upon request.
Packed the spare key in an envelope and kept it alongside the cluster inside a box which was a snug fit. Loaded the box with Styrofoam peanuts (thanks to the tail lights shipment!), sealed the box with cellophane tape all around, stuck the packing labels and the address, kept the declaration letter inside a reusable polythene envelope and stuck it to the box. We headed to our friendly DTDC branch. The DTDC branch charged Rs. 826 for sending the box using DTDC Blue.
The wait began! And it was going to be a rather painful one knowing I cannot use the car without the cluster. I dropped a message to our car-pooling group on WhatsApp:
DTDC delivered the consignment 3 days later (probable delay by a day due to monsoons) and Sugesh dropped me a message that he has received it and is working on it. The customs duty amount was credited to his account the same day and I sent him a mail intimating him of the credit. Few hours later, a lady calls me and promptly reconfirms my address. The consignment was shipped the same day via DTDC, true to his word. Thanks to the weekend, the consignment got delayed and 4 days later, it was finally delivered.
The packaging was neat. The two clusters were packed in ample bubble wrap and placed inside two separate OEM boxes. These boxes were then placed inside a bigger box with some additional bubble wrap and Styrofoam peanuts, with the packaging labels were stuck on top of it.
The cluster is also capable of displaying HU information such as radio channels, track currently being played etc. and phone contacts, call information, range, battery life of the device connected etc via Bluetooth. However these features need to be activated via VCDS. Once I get them up and running (hopefully in a few days" time), I shall post it here.
Pretty good I"d say. It always feels good to dismantle things and assembling it yourself, getting stuck at some point, scratching the head over it, referring to the owner"s manual, online VW workshop manuals or YouTube videos (just like how you"d refer to a game"s walkthrough if you would get stuck somewhere). Of course, one can always get it done by a qualified aftermarket garage, be a bystander and pay them a fee. As far as possible, I"d love to get things done by myself. It"s super fun and can teach us a thing or two.
For the petrol variants, this is an acceptable swap. In any case, no stock cables or connectors were cut/spliced. An additional cable was inserted into the connector which can always be removed if the need arises. The cluster is swapped retaining the stock one so this mod is perfectly reversible if the need arises (the odo reading on the stock cluster has to be corrected however). It is only when the cluster is used in the diesel engine variants, the lack of the glow plug warning can be bothersome. This light flashes for a second when the key is turned before cranking the engine but the light can flash for a longer period during cold weathers (indicating that the glow plug is heating). So please keep this in mind before attempting the swap.

A: Please make sure the serial number and registered password you input are correct. Please pay special attention to letter “O” and number “0” and letter “I” and number “1” also. Even though there is a serial number on the back label, please always use the one you found by selecting Setup>About.
If the registration still fails, please send the product serial number and password, which can be found by booting up the scanner, selecting Setup >About, to Sales@VidentShop.co.uk with a brief explanation of the problem you have. We will check and get back to you with a solution in 2 business day.
Or boot up scan tool after connecting the vehicle and select Setup from the main menu on the scanner. Then select About to check the register serial number and password.
(1)Now close the iScanzilla software, remove the TF card from your tool (making sure the tool is turned off first!) and connect it to the PC via an TF card reader.
(2)Once Windows has detected the TF card, run the iScanzilla software and login again. click the "My Updates" button. After a few seconds, a list of the available software updates will appear.
Please have your attention here: the update process can take a long time. If your tool has not been updated recently, it may take a few hours for the update process to complete. Once the update has completed, don"t forget to "safely remove" the SD card in Windows before unplugging it, to avoid the possibility of data corruption.
I have 2006 G6 GTP (CAN protocol), 2001 Blazer (J1850 VPW) and 2004 Avalanche (J1850 VPW) to activate ABS bleeding, and I found Vident Ilink400 Multi-System Scan Tool for GM on videntshop.co.uk where someone said it worked on a 2003 S10 for crank sensor relearn. Also found someone who said it read cam sensor retard. And another who said it worked on the Blazer ABS Bleeding procedure. Also found some people who had some troubles, but there is always people who can’t get things to work when they should. what I find interesting is that the manufacturer’s web site says it works on both OBD1 and OBD2 – so maybe this will work on 1995 OBD1.5?
I’m REALLY impressed with it. Downloaded and installed GM software update. Hooked up to my 2006 G6 GTP (CAN protocol), my 2001 Blazer (J1850 VPW), and my 2004 Avalanche (J1850 VPW). The Avalanche it does not automatically recognize the vehicle and forces me to enter some info about the vehicle manually. Apparently does ABS brake bleeding and crank sensor relearn on all 3 GM vehicles (actually tried the brake bleeding procedure on the Avalanche). Did not look for cam sensor retard on the Avalanche and the G6, but does read the all-important Cam Sensor Retard on my Blazer. Saw it does injector balance test on Avalanche. Does misfire counters for all three. Plus was reading BCM and HVAC codes on Avalanche. Red and identified a entertainment (radio) code on the g6. However could not find TCCM module on either Blazer or Avalanche (both 4-button). Too much to list – has TONS of capability. Way, way more than my HP Tuners VCM scanner software. But remember you only get one manufacturer’s PIDs – pay $60 each for any more you want to install. The box claims it’s compatible with OBD1 and OBD2 but no OBD1 connector included so who knows. A little clunky to get through the menus, but it’s a handheld scanner.
I would say anyone with 1998+ Blazer is VERY safe to buy this scan tool Vident Ilink 400 and will be EXTREMELY happy with it for the price. It is obviously pretty cheaply made and Chinese, but should be OK.
Have no idea how it will work with 1995 (OBD1.5), or 1996-1997 Blazers (we know some Bluetooth scanning apps have trouble with GM PIDs on 1996-1997). I’ll try to review this scanner more thoroughly sometime this fall and post it. In the meantime, if anyone collects data using this scanner on the 1995-1997 Blazers, please let me know so I can include that info. I have no idea how it will work (GM PIDs and bidirectional controls) with very new vehicles (ie 2013+) but I believe the CAN protocol is consistent through 2012 and it seem to do the most module types for the CANBUS vehicles so they should be good to go.
Take a typical Bluetooth OBD app for example, tons of these out there – only a few do enhanced GM PIDs (sensor/data monitoring) and even fewer have all the useful specific PIDs for a Blazer such as cam sensor retard. Specifically these are Car Gauge Pro (98+ blazer only – includes enhanced PIDs), Dash Command w/enhanced GM PID purchase (all years Blazer), Blue Driver (I have not personally reviewed but seems to work for iPhone users). Car Gauge Pro and Dash Command requires a separate Bluetooth OBD2 adapter to be purchased – recommend BAFX one. The rest have big promises, little susbstance. However, please be advised thatnone of the Bluetooth apps do Brake Bleeding or Crank Sensor Relearns, which is what the Ilink400 is really about.
At $300+ you can buy Windows software that will do the Crank Sensor Relearn, but the brake bleeding is not supported on HP Tuners anyways. Don’t know about the others. HP Tuners, Autoenginuity, EFI live.
At $150 you can buy Windows software Scan XL Pro that pretty much equals the functions of Dash Command – same company – different platform – don’t have to buy the Enhanced GM PIDs for each vehicle.
So I was quite excited to find the Ilink400 would do both brake bleeding and things like the crank sensor relearn and HVAC. The handheld scanner I bought and returned before buying mine would only do the brake bleeding + simplest generic OBD2 PIDs.
For casual Blazer diagnostics, for under $50 I recommend Dash Command or Car Gauge Pro (Car Gauge Pro does more on 1998+ Blazers, but not as intuitive to use and is poorly documented). If you feel the need for crank sensor relearn or brake bleeding or more bi-directional control, then for under $150 the Vident Ilink400 seems made to order. I like them ALL and find uses for each!!! The only one that does it all is the factory Tech 2.
Vident Ilink400 gm– just figured out the TCCM IS reachable using the Ilink400, but you find it under Powertrain (also Cruise Control is found under powertrain). Looks like you can monitor the status of various switches and their positions + much more. Found this when working on my Avalanche cruise control. Brake switch was not working and you could see the status of all the cruise control switches. It’s a great little handheld.
