The story of my Nexus 4"s tragedy is sad and full of valuable life lessons valuable for all generations. But the short version of it is this: It fell, it broke, I was upset. After looking at the options and some soul searching, I decided to take a chance on doing it myself.

I ordered this kit on a Thursday night and it arrived on a Monday in a small padded envelope. The screen was in a small bubble wrap sleeve and appeared as-described and adequately protected. As for the tools, the description says you get T5, T6, phillips, and flat head screwdrivers and two plastic pry tools. What I received was two phillips, one flat head, and one torx screwdriver. I don"t know what size torx but it fit the phone. I received two plastic pry tools (one wide, one narrow), plus something that looked like a big guitar pick, plus a suction cup on a split ring. The tools aren"t great quality but they did the job just fine.

The process took about 2 hours, not counting a trip to the store for tape. There were no instructions in my kit so, to perform the operation, I consulted the video instructions by "Tim Clerkx", titled "LG NEXUS 4 (E960) screen replacement ...". His instructions are great as-is but I want to a couple bits based on my experience:

3. The screen is the second real difficulty (well, for me). It took a lot of chipping and chiseling. Two warnings: 1. When chiseling out the glass around the edge, I broke through a couple times and nicked the chrome frame. Not pretty. 2. I tried fracturing the glass into smaller pieces using a pointy screwdriver. I can confirm that this stunt is as stupid as it sounds. The force it took to do this sent the tip of the driver through the body. Fortunately, I had already removed the PCB from the underside of the phone.

It"s been back together for two full weeks now and everything"s working fine. One issue: The screen looks OK when I just hold the phone but, when I press on it near the middle with a white screen, a purple blotch briefly shimmers on the left side.

Would I recommend this item? Yes. If you"re going to DIY, I think this is a good first kit. There are much cheaper alternatives as long as you already have the tools and you don"t mind waiting 6 weeks for a package from Hong Kong. ("Seller1ON1" got it to me in 2 business days.) And really the price is the only thing that would give me any pause about ordering it again, hence 4 stars.

First - the only thing wrong with my phone was a cracked screen. The back was fine, the chrome frame was fine, nothing was bent, the electronics worked as normal. If your phone is seriously beat up, screen replacement might not be an option.

Second - I looked at getting a repair from a cell phone kiosk down the street and from LG directly. Both options appeared cheaper than this kit (at least before shipping) but took longer to turn around. I didn"t do it because I was traveling, I didn"t want to wait, and I was nervous about handing over my phone unsupervised. Note: LG says they wipe the phone immediately upon receipt. I believe them. I"m still nervous.

Overall, the screen has performed great. Color, brightness, touch performance, etc. have all been what I"d hoped. It still has the aforementioned purple blotch but it hasn"t gotten worse. Also there"s a blemish near the edge that I originally thought was tape residue. I suspect the screen I got was actually an operational factory second. Neither issue has really affected my user experience but if I"d received a brand new phone with these issues, I"d have exchanged it.
