A little context: the device is for a game called geocaching and the player will use it in a forest; the issue is that the device itself will live in the forest (when not in use, it will be in a waterproof container). The idea is that the player/user will attach the battery, wait for the GPS to get a fix, press a button, and the device will pick a random spot for the user to get to in a particular amount of time. Once the user makes it there (taking the device with), an LED will light up and the timer will start over, requiring the user to get back to the original spot. Assuming the user is successful, a servo motor will turn and open the trap door to allow the user access the log book, which will be inside the device itself.
So the device itself consists of a GPS module, the Arduino (currently an Uno but possibly a Mega because I"m running out of pins and the program may be larger than 32k), a microSD card (to write the coords with the date and time to preserve them in case the user unplugs the battery), an LCD, LED, button, and servo. And all the accompanying wiring. And the log book (standard small spiral notebook).
But in this project it is required to use an LCD screen (2x20 or 2x40, it"s not critical). My problem with these projects has always been the finish. Whenever I have trimmed the gap of the plastic layer to fit a screen, the finish is quite bad. The cut, no matter how well you do it, is not perfectly straight, and there is a gap through which water, dirt, etc. would get though.
I"m looking for boxes on the internet that come with a well-coupled LCD as standard, but I can"t find anything. Another option would be to install a frame or bezel but I don"t see anything
Additionally, the polarizers used on the outside of the LCD and OLED are susceptible to absorbing water. For instance, if a drop of water is left on the display, it can turn the polarizer cloudy where the water is absorbed.
To ensure that the display can be safely submerged in liquid, you need to waterproof all of the electronics — including the display — inside a case. This is not a simple task, especially if there are keypads or connectors in the design.
Here are examples of mods created by our customers to create water-resistant (metal) and waterproof (plastic) cases for Crystalfontz 633 keypad LCD modules.
7. 5V compatible, use with 3.3V or 5V logic.Note: The pins must be left in the right state after touch screen operations. Otherwise, the screen won"t function correctly.Package included:1 x 2.4 inch TFT LCD Display Touch Screen Module

However, using the HC-SR04 outside is a different story. It is a pretty fragile device and can easily be damaged by dirt, or even high winds. And, above all, it is not waterproof. Even sealing up its circuit board would not protect it, as the two transducers it uses are essentially just small speaker/microphones.
The A02YYUW is an ultrasonic distance sensor that bears some resemblance to the HC-SR04 in that it has a separate receiver and transmitter. The device is enclosed in a rubber-like material and is fully waterproof.
If you need an ultrasonic distance sensor that is waterproof, then either of these units would make an excellent choice. They both performed well, and they are rated for harsh environments.
They are, however, more expensive than the HC-SR04, so if you don’t require a rugged waterproof sensor then the latter is still a more economical choice.
Learn to use the JSN-SR04T and A02YYUW waterproof ultrasonic distance sensors with an Arduino. In this article, you"ll learn how these sensors work, how they compare to one another, and how to use them with an Arduino.
