Samsung Electronics has recently requested China’s largest display maker BOE to produce panels for Galaxy Watch 6, which will come out in the second half of 2023. Currently, Samsung Electronics is coordinating production processes and schedules with BOE. The Korean smartphone giant is also discussing a contract with BOE to have the latter produce OLED panels for flagship Samsung smartphones such as Galaxy foldable phones.

A Samsung official said that the company is considering making deals with BOE as part of its efforts to diversify parts suppliers, adding that nothing has been decided yet concerning the deals.

Companies from both India and China have shown interest in buying Samsung Display’s liquid crystal display (LCD) equipment at its now-defunct L8-1 LCD production line, TheElec has learned.

L8-1 line was previously used by the South Korean display panel maker to manufacture panels for TV and IT products, but the line went offline during the first quarter of this year. Samsung Display has previously said it was exiting its LCD business.

However, companies from India are likely to be more aggressive in purchasing the equipment as the government there is planning to promote their LCD industry, they said.

Meanwhile, India is yet to make meaningful inroads in the LCD space due to a lack of infrastructure that can support the industry, such as readily available electricity and water.

However, according to India Cellular and Electronics Association, local LCD demand is expected to grow to US$18.9 billion in 2025 from its current US$5.4 billion.

The firm initially intended to wrap up its exit from the LCD business last year but had been extending production from the request of Samsung Electronics’ TV business.

L8-1, which is a Gen 8.5 line, halted production during the first quarter this year. Component company YMC had started dismantling the installed LCD equipment in July. The process will be wrapped up in May next year. L8-2 is currently manufacturing LCD panels.

Samsung is pretty serious about its Galaxy A series and for a good reason - these midrange devices have been key to the good financial results of the Korean company in the past few years.

Normally, Samsung supplies all displays found in Galaxy devices but according to the latest rumors, the company might switch to a Chinese manufacturer in order to increase its profit margins.

According to a report (by the South Korean site TheElec), Samsung and the Chinese display manufacturer BOE are already developing screens for the 2022 Galaxy A73 phone. BOE is not the only option for Samsung, though - the Chinese company CSOT is also mentioned in the report.

Of course, there’s nothing official at the moment, and Samsung might just want to evaluate the quality of OLED displays manufactured by the two Chinese companies, in order to make a decision about its future Galaxy A lineup.

There’s not much information about the Galaxy A73 at this point. The phone is slated for a release sometime in early 2022. According to the latest rumors, it might sport a 108MP main camera, featuring the ISOCELL HM2 1/1.52" sensor.

The display of the Galaxy A73 is rumored to be a 6.7-inch Full-HD+ (1080x2400 pixels) Super AMOLED screen with an aspect ratio of 20:9, a pixel density of 393ppi, and a refresh rate of 90Hz.

The Samsung Galaxy A73 will come equipped with a quad rear camera setup on the back, comprising of the aforementioned 108MP (f/1.8) primary sensor, a 12MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide lens, an 8MP (f/2.4) telephoto sensor, and a 5MP (f/2.4) macro camera. The selfie camera on the front is believed to be a 32MP (f/2.2).

The interesting part about this rumor piece is that Samsung is supposedly trying to increase its profit margins. This does make sense, as the Galaxy A series devices are selling like hot cocoa during a winter storm.

Samsung wants to keep Galaxy A prices steady but capitalize on the cheaper BOE displays to make a bigger profit. It’s easy to start pointing fingers and accuse the company of being a profit-oriented capitalistic organization (which it really is) but are BOE displays that bad of a deal?

Our take is that Samsung followed BOE’s development over the years and now the Chinese company can comply with all the requirements of a quality OLED display. Earlier this year Samsung announced that it will start putting BOE displays in Galaxy M series devices but there wasn’t any development on the subject.

And BOE has already proven itself - the company supplies OLED panels for Huawei phones, and even though the US trade ban practically obliterated Huawei’s market share, its phones sport some of the best hardware in the industry, including the displays.

Another interesting topic emerges from the above - Huawei’s demise reflected on BOE and the number of OLED panels ordered. The potential contract with Samsung could fill that void.

So, you shouldn’t worry too much about Samsung using Chinese OLED panels in its Galaxy A series. What’s worrying is that the company wants to increase its profits, even though it scored some of the highest results in the past few quarters.

Apple has reportedly sealed the deal with BOE for manufacturing screens for its upcoming line-up of flagship smartphones in the iPhone 14 series. It has been reported that the deal has been signed at a whopping USD 7.75 million. According to the contract, BOE will be manufacturing 25 per cent of the OLED displays for the iPhone 14 series.

BOE will only produce 6.1-inch panels under the contract. This means that the vanilla models in the iPhone 14 line-up will use displays by BOE, while the iPhone 14 Max and Pro Max models will likely stick to screens manufactured by LG and Samsung. This is the first time that the Chinese brand, known for its expertise in manufacturing displays, will be making displays for iPhones.

Even as Apple fans are awaiting any official development on the upcoming iPhone models, several reports have hinted at the tech giant’s progress with the M3 Apple Silicon Chip. According to noted tech journalist Mark Gurman, the Cupertino-based tech giant is already working on an iMac with the latest M3 chip along with around nine other new mac models.

A day after Samsung announced a pair of foldable devices, Xiaomi launched its second-gen foldable, Mix Fold 2, in China. The new phone sports a 6.56-inch outer display, 8.02-inch inner display and a Leica-powered camera system. The company has managed to fit the internals in a sleek frame that’s 5.4mm unfolded and 11.2mm folded. For comparison, the Samsung Fold 4 is 6.3mm unfolded and 15.8mm folded. Though Xiaomi also has an extreme camera bump to show for it. Like the Galaxy Fold, the Mix Fold 2 is powered by Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

While the phone sounds exciting on paper, it’s limited to the China market for now, so it’s not going to be a threat to other players like Samsung. While the broader global smartphone market is seeing a growth decline, analysts project an upward curve for foldables. A report from Counterpoint predicts that companies will ship 16 million foldables this year, and that number will go up to 26 million next year. Xiaomi has the opportunity to make a mark in the market, but in the short term, Samsung still has a significant head start.

“Samsung has led the market since the beginning, and we think its dominance will continue for some time. Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi and Vivo are all introducing new foldables but they are mostly limited to the Chinese market. Motorola may be the only contender in markets like the USA for now,” Counterpoint Senior Analyst Jene Park said.

South Korea’s Samsung is the global leader in manufacturing OLED displays for smartphones, enjoying a market share of over 90% in terms of sales. However, Samsung faces rising challengers, including its compatriot LG and China’s BOE. We focus on BOE because it likely poses the biggest long-run challenge to Samsung, for two main reasons.

First, as a state-owned enterprise, BOE enjoys access to concessionary state financing, while many of its overseas competitors do not. Since OLED display manufacturing is extremely capital-intensive, the ability to secure capital is a big advantage. For example, BOE’s OLED production drive has already cost over $10 billion, most of which was borrowed from state banks. Second, BOE can better access end users of its products because Chinese smartphone brands are becoming dominant. For instance, Samsung’s share of the Chinese smartphone market has dwindled to 2% amid competition from the likes of Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo, who have also increasingly turned to BOE as their OLED display supplier.

This case study examines the Apple iPhone Xs Max (OLED display supplied by Samsung) and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro (BOE) to compare the supply chains of the South Korean incumbent and its Chinese challenger. Although both supply chains are highly concentrated in East Asia, there is a key difference. Samsung’s supply chain is almost entirely vertically integrated, while BOE still relies mostly on foreign suppliers.

Cost: Samsung’s major advantages over BOE are cost and yield. An estimate posits that for Gen 6 mobile OLED displays, a 1% improvement in annual yield rate will save $20 million annually. Although BOE has managed to improve its yield rate from as low as 10% in early 2018 to between 50% and 70% in 2019, Samsung’s yield rate is 80%. So, BOE’s costs are still higher, but it is closing the gap.

Capacity: Samsung currently controls over 90% of global manufacturing capacity for smartphone OLED displays. Although BOE is quickly catching up, the Chinese company will still have less than half of Samsung’s capacity in 2022.

Downstream Relationship: Samsung’s dominance over smartphone display manufacturing has caused many of its customers to worry about potential over-dependence on a single supplier. Thus, many device makers are now looking for alternative suppliers as a hedge. And some of them, like Huawei, are turning to BOE.

ETNews reports that Samsung Display has signed a deal to supply foldable displays select smartphone makers in China. The plan is to start shipping the displays in the third quarter and to deliver 1 million units before the end of the year.

This will lead to several foldable phones being announced in the second half of 2021. According to insiders, Oppo and vivo will be launching phones, other companies may be involved as well. The company will be supplying both large horizontal folding screens (like on the Z Fold) and smaller vertical folding screens (Z Flip).
