Thanks to the right-to-repair movement, the options for mending a broken phone screen have expanded. Between simple DIY fixes, third-party repair shops, and even manufacturer-sponsored mail-in programs, there’s an option for everyone.
It all boils down to a difficult-to-reach compromise between consumer desires and engineering reality. In other words, we want phones with maxed out displays that also feature an elegant design. However, those slim edges and nearly bezel-less screens have to make some concessions in the durability department.
“When you drop your phone, elastic energy stored in the phone’s glass is converted into surface energy, which is why your glass cracks,” the company notes in a September 2018 blog post. “[W]hen you drop your phone, the force of impact will overcome the surface compression, resulting in small stresses that could lead to the shattering of your screen.”

This Agreement covers the repair or replacement of the screen of Your Product only (and in many instances, the Motorola Screen Protector), and does not cover:
i. Screen or Product repairs that are covered by the standard manufacturer’s warranty or any added Extended Warranty Service, or are a result of a recall or a published manufacturer’s defect;
vi. Damage that occurs when both elements of MCSP Bundle were not being used at the same time, or damage caused by the use of any protective case or screen protector other than the Motorola Case and Motorola Screen Protector contained in the MCSP Bundle;
To qualify for the warranty services provided under the MCSP Bundle, You must register the MCSP Bundle on Your applicable Product within thirty (30) days of purchasing such MCSP Bundle. In order to register Your Product, You need to: (i) download the Moto Care Screen Protect app from Google Play; (ii) begin the registration process by submitting your Product IMEI number, scanning the barcode on Your Warranty Card (or entering the registration code), entering Your email address and Order Number, and providing any other relevant information, and (iii) use the Moto Care Screen Protect app to complete the diagnostic process, which will include a few tests to make sure that the Product is in working order. The tests will include (a) a hardware test to check the display and touch screen, where Your screen will turn red, then green, then blue; and (b) a screen verification, where You will be asked three (3) questions to determine the condition of Your Product.
The period of warranty service coverage under the MCSP Bundle shall begin on the date of purchase of the MCSP Bundle (which must be registered within thirty (30) days of purchase of such MCSP Bundle), and continues for the earlier of: (i) 24 months; or (ii) upon the screen on the Product having been repaired three (3) times within such coverage period (“Term”). Warranty services under the MCSP Bundle will expire on the last day of the twenty-four (24) month period immediately following such registration date, if not terminated sooner in accordance with this Section 5. The limited warranty coverage provided under the MCSP Bundle will terminate immediately (a) if you reject these terms within thirty (30) days of purchasing the MCSP Bundle, (b) if Your Product fails the hardware diagnostics testing, or (c) upon attempting to transfer the MCSP Bundle to a new or different device. In the event of termination under subsections (a) or (b) above, You may return Your MCSP Bundle to the retailer from which you purchased for a full refund.
In the event of a Screen Protection Coverage incident during the Term of this Agreement, please go to https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/mcp/service to log in your repair request and follow the directions provided to mail in Your Product. Once Motorola authorizes Your claim, We will at Our sole discretion (i) repair/replace the screen of Your Product with new or refurbished parts, or (ii) if We determine that the screen cannot be repaired, if parts are no longer available, or if parts have been discontinued then, We will instead replace Your Product with another device of equal or greater value, at Motorola’s discretion. Any such replacement will be in lieu of a repair, and will be Your exclusive remedy in the event the Product is not repairable. Parts will be replaced with those of like kind and quality manufactured by Motorola or manufacturer of the MCSP Bundle components. If the screen of Your Product is able to be repaired/replaced under the terms hereof, service will be provided by one of Motorola’s authorized service centers, whereby any such repair/replacement for any Screen Protection Coverage will be done at no cost to You. You may be asked to provide proof of purchase as a condition to receiving service under this Agreement. Your original purchase receipt should be kept with this Agreement in a safe place. We will also replace, at no cost to You, the screen protector for the Product. But remember, for the repair/replacement to be covered, the incident resulting in Screen Protection Coverage must have happened while the MCSP Bundle was installed on the Product and You must have registered the MCSP Bundle within thirty (30) days of Your purchase. You are responsible to backup all Product software and data prior to commencement of screen repair/replacement. In the event the Product has damage that is not covered under Screen Protection Coverage, then Motorola (or its authorized service center or subcontractors) may still be able to fix the screen of Your Product, but it will not be free, and the cost will be determined by Motorola and You will need to pay for the cost of any damage that is not covered under this Agreement.
The limited warranty provided under the MCSP Bundle and this Agreement does not cover damage to the Motorola screen protector or protective case, which are covered by their manufacturer warranties. In all countries except the Asia Pacific region and Australia and New Zealand, Belkin warrants the Belkin screen protection product for the lifetime of the original device to which the screen protection product is applied. “Lifetime of the original device” means as long as the device to which the screen protection product is applied continues to be used by the original purchaser, Belkin will continue to warrant the screen protection product against wear and tear. If your Android device is relatively new (read: still under manufacturer"s warranty), the first place you"ll want to go for your phone fix is the manufacturer. The price for a broken screen will vary depending on your device, but for a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge you"re probably looking at around $270 plus a day or two without your device. Going to the manufacturer is almost always going to be more expensive than a third-party repair shop, but your warranty will stay intact and your phone will be fully restored (possibly even replaced with a fully refurbished model) to its pre-broken-screen excellence (and waterproof phones, like the Galaxy S7 Edge
Samsung owners might want to consider purchasing Samsung Protection Plus -- it"s like Apple Care, but for your Galaxy phone. Samsung Protection Plus is an extended warranty available for all of Samsung"s high-end smartphones that covers everything from mechanical breakdowns to accidental damage (e.g., broken screens). It costs between $99 and $129 for two years of protection -- during those two years, you"ll get two accidental damage claims per year and you"ll pay a $79 deductible per incident. So one broken screen replacement on the Galaxy S7 Edge will cost you $208.
If you have a Google Pixel, Google has paired up with third-party repair chain uBreakiFixto offer walk-in screen repairs for the relatively affordable price of $129 for the PixelGoogle offers a Device Protection Plan for the Pixel and the Pixel XL. The Device Protection Plan costs $99 for two years" worth of coverage, and covers up to two incidents of accidental damage (but you"ll pay a deductible for each incident -- $79 for the Pixel and $99 for the Pixel XL). In other words, one broken Pixel screen will cost you $178, while one broken Pixel XL screen will cost you $198.
If you have an HTC 10HTC"s Uh Oh Protection plan. Uh Oh Protection will repair or replace your HTC 10 one time (within the first 12 months of ownership) if the screen breaks, or if there"s damage due to water/moisture, extreme thermal or environmental conditions, corrosion or oxidation. HTC will even send you a replacement device before you send in your damaged phone (within one business day), but you"ll have to agree to a $599 credit card hold until HTC receives your device.
There are a couple of benefits -- aside from price -- to using a third-party repair service. If you go to a local repair shop, they"ll be able to fix your phone quickly (some in less than an hour; one local LA shop even offered to come right to my apartment and fix it on the spot), which means you won"t be stuck without a phone. Most third-party repair shops also offer a warranty on the parts they replace, which means you can call them if your replacement screen stops working for any reason (aside from, you know, dropping it and breaking it again).
Some places will also offer a slightly lower price for repairing broken glass (as opposed to broken glass anda broken LCD) -- uBreakiFix, for example, charges $180 to repair the glass on an LG G5to repair the glass and the LCD on the same phone.
Using a third-party repair service to fix your device"s broken screen will almost certainly void your manufacturer"s warranty, so if your phone is new it"s best to first check out the manufacturer"s quote. Some new phones, like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, are very difficult to repair, so you may find that the manufacturer has a better price than any reputable third-party service.
Assuming your device"s broken screen isn"t drastically interfering with your ability to use your phone, or making your fingers bleed, you may want to just ride out the cracks until you get a new phone (or until it does make your fingers bleed). To make your device last as long as possible, cracks and all, I suggest putting it in a sturdy, shockproof case, because any bumps or drops could cause more damage. If the cracks on the screen cross usable area, you may also want to look into a glass screen protector -- to protect your fingers from cuts and to protect your screen from more damage.
So, you’ve accidentally dropped your phone with its face down onto a brick floor… and on picking it, all you can see now is a new flower or cobweb artwork on your screen. Moving forward, you can flash a bright light on the screen to check if your phone screen is broken or it"s just the tempered glass. Most times, flashing a bright light on the screen won"t cause much refraction of light if only the tempered glass was broken. However, you get much light refraction if the main phone screen is broken.
More so, seeing some deep lines and cracks under the tempered glass probably means the phone screen is cracked. If the damages are not so deep, however, then only the tempered glass is cracked.
Next, you should examine the edges and corners of the phone screen. If there are cracks or lines there, that means your phone screen is cracked. Most screen protectors don"t cover the entire part of the screen, so looking at the edges shouldn"t be a problem. Meanwhile, you may need to remove your phone’s back cover first.
Lastly, if you"re still not convinced whether you cracked your phone screen or the tempered glass, you should take a bold step and remove the tempered glass. Doing that will give you a clean look at what the damaged part looks like.
Note:Be gentle and calm while removing the tempered glass to avoid damaging the screen and your fingers. And if the adhesive on the tempered glass is too hard, you may need someone else’s assistance.
If you’re lucky enough, you may find out that the crack is not extended to the main screen. In that case, you can purchase a new tempered glass at a low cost in the nearest store. Otherwise, visit the official service provider to replace your phone"s broken screen as soon as possible to avoid damaging your fingers and other components of the device.
If your phone is cracked, you can take it to a phone repair technician or mobile phone repair shop near you to check whether only the tempered glass is broken or the main screen is broken.
