The Sony model KDL-52W4100 is a 52-inch Bravia LCD (liquid-crystal display) television that can also be used as a computer display. It was released in 2008. Sony Corporation is a Japanese conglomerate corporation that is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of consumer and professional electronic products.

The television features 1080p high-definition picture and Motionflow 120HZ Technology that doubles the frame rate from 60 to 120 feet per second (fps) with Sony’s Blur Reduction algorithm. The KDL-52W4100 model can be used with XMB (Xcross Media bar), which is an operation guide with an on-screen menu for managing viewing options. This television also includes a 3D comb filter and an image panel driver and three distinct imaging circuits to reduce video noise and image blur, and enhance video quality. The KDL-52W4100 model features a motion-adaptive I/P converter, CineMotion 3:2 reverse pull-down, and closed-captioning options. An S-Force audio system with two speakers provides the effect of surround sound. The KDL-52W4100 has a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels with an aspect ratio of 16:9.

A T-con board — short for “timing control board” or “timing controller” — is found in LED and LCD TVs. This board converts the video signal from the main board and sends it directly to the screen to display the signal in the correct order and at the correct spot on the screen.

Then you may have a bad T-Con board that needs replacement. Please refer to the table below which indicates potential problems depending on the number of red light blinks for these particular models.

Do note that there are 2 possible causes for each error code and in this case, 12 or 14 red LED standby light blinks could mean faulty LCD panels or T-Con board so you will need to follow the instructions in the video to figure out which one it is. Fortunately, the fix only required replacement of the T-Con board and that the LCD panel was just fine so a disaster was definitely averted. Bad LCD panels are not cheap to fix. The only way to do it is to replace it and an LCD TV screen replacement, when out of warranty, is not advisable in most cases due to the prohibitive costs.

If, after replacing the T-Con board, you find the problem persisting, then you might have a bad LCD panel issue on your hands and your options will be very limited, unfortunately.

LCDs are said to have a slightly longer lifespan to plasmas, but the difference is not particularly significant. Plasma"s half life ranges between 30,000 to 50,000 hours, while LCD offers around 60,000 hours.

It"s possible to change the lamp for both plasmas and LCDs, but not all manufacturers offer this service and the cost is usually greater than the expense of simply buying a new TV.

I picked up this fairly clean Sony KDL-52W4100 from an E-Waste bin a little while ago (with remote!). When you plug it in, you can hear a relay click, and then you can turn it on. The sony marquee below the screen lights up and the backlight turns on (although the screen looks grey with a lot of flashlighting). After a few seconds (although it might not be the same amount of time each attempt), it shuts off and throws a 14 blink repeating error code. A little research (I do not have the service manual) shows this is an LCD panel failure. I"ve also read that on these older units, the T-CON board is considered part of the LCD panel. Is this so? How does a panel go bad? It seems "fine".

Should I try replacing the (kind of expensive) TCON or is this a lost cause? Is there any troubleshooting I can do with the ribbons going to the panel to further determine anything? Do you much smarter folks have any better ideas?
