LCD Edge View is a LCD located on the graphics card, you can use it todisplay GPU info including temperature, usage, clock speed, fan speed, VRAM usage, VRAM clock and total card power. All this information can be shown one by one or just certain ones on the LCD.
Besides that, there are three different displaying styles available and users could choose their ideal one. However, not just GPU info but FPS (Frame Per Second) in the game or other application could be displayed through LCD Edge View.
The LCD Edge View can also show customized content including text, pictures or even short GIF animations.Users could input the preferred text to the LCD, also set the font size, bold or italic. It also supports multi-language so users could input whatever type of text they want.
About the picture, LCD Edge View allows users to upload a JPEG file to it and AORUS RGB Fusion software will let users choose which region of the picture should be shown. The support of short GIF animations is the most interesting part.
Users can upload a short animation in terms of GIF to be shown on the LCD so they can easily build up a graphics card with their own style. All of the customizations above can be done via AORUS RGB Fusion software.
There’s something more interesting with LCD Edge View: The little CHIBI.CHIBI is a little falcon digitally living in the LCD Edge View and will grow up as more time users spend with their graphics card. Users could always check their little CHIBI through the LCD Edge View and watch it eat, sleep or fly around, which is quite interactive and interesting.
In conclusion, LCD Edge View can display a series of useful GPU information, customized text, pictures, and animations, allowing users to build up the graphics card with their own style. Users can also have more interaction with their card via the little CHIBI, the exclusive little digital falcon living inside the LCD Edge View, which brings more fun while playing with the graphics card.
This is my seventh GeForce RTX 3080 review, this time from Colorful, one of the biggest players on the Chinese market. Their graphics cards have a long history of being just a little bit more over the top compared to others. The Colorful iGame GeForce RTX 3080 Vulcan OC is the company"s flagship for the RTX 3080 series. Besides the massive cooler, it offers a unique feature, a small LCD screen that lets you display vital stats of your graphics card and CPU.
Out of the box, the Vulcan OC runs at 1710 MHz rated boost, which matches the NVIDIA Founders Edition clocks exactly. I hear you ask why this card is called "OC" then. Well, I was a bit surprised at first, too. It seems the OC settings are activated only when you press the dual BIOS "Turbo" button near the rear I/O bracket. With the Turbo BIOS active, the card runs at 1800 MHz rated boost, which is higher than most other RTX 3080 custom designs. At the same time, the power limit is raised from 320 W to 370 W—this will make a big difference, having more impact than just the rated boost clock. The difference between the BIOSes is so big, I decided to fully test both to show proper product performance.
Averaged over our whole game testing suite at 4K resolution, the Vulcan OC with the default BIOS is 1% faster than the NVIDIA Founders Edition, which is not a whole lot. The Turbo BIOS works much better, running 3% faster than the default BIOS, which brings the total uplift against the FE to 4%. Albeit not a huge difference, it is still a decent increase for a RTX 3080 custom design. Compared to the RTX 2080 Ti, the card is 37% faster, a pretty impressive gap. The uplift against the RTX 2080 Super is almost 65%. AMD"s top dog, the Radeon RX 5700 XT, will only give you half (!) the FPS of the iGame RTX 3080. AMD is announcing new graphics cards soon, which are expected to change this situation, but I doubt they"ll match the RTX 3080. RTX 3090 is less than 10% faster at much higher cost—barely worth it.
If you are looking for a fluid 4K gaming experience, the RTX 3080 is the card you want. At lower resolutions, many games are CPU bottlenecked though, so the card won"t be able to play out its full potential. The RTX 3080 is also a good option for 1440p high refresh-rate gaming, but I definitely wouldn"t spend that much money just for Full HD 1080p gaming.
Visually, the iGame RTX 3080 Vulcan looks great because of a mix of gray, silver, and black paired with an edgy cooler shroud that"s not too distracting. The Colorful thermal solution achieves very low temperatures of 67°C with the default BIOS and 72°C with the Turbo BIOS—both lower than many competing cards. Fan noise levels are higher, though. With 35 dBA and 37 dBA, they are sitting right next to the Founders Edition"s 36 dBA. Given the low temperatures, I feel like Colorful could have used a slightly less aggressive fan curve. On the other hand, I hear a lot of gamers in the Asian markets favor low temperatures over fan noise, which could explain the fan settings. NVIDIA introduced idle fan stop on their Founders Edition cards with the GeForce RTX 30 series, which makes this capability a standard feature to have. The Colorful iGame RTX 3080 Vulcan will turn off its fans in idle, desktop work, Internet browsing, and light gaming for the perfect noise-free experience.
With the Vulcan, Colorful is including a small LCD monitor that"s attached to the top edge of the graphics card, capable of displaying various important statistics, like frequencies and temperatures. The iGame Center software is required to send those stats to the LCD, though. The colors of the panel are crisp and the animations smooth, much better than other solutions we"ve seen in the past. You may customize which sensor values are displayed, with how much delay between them and in which order. You may also choose between a "one value + chart" or "two values" display format, and can show off your own uploaded logo.
Power efficiency is comparable to the Founders Edition. Actually, it is a tiny bit better. This is the case with both the default and Turbo BIOS. While the default BIOS matches FE power consumption exactly, the Turbo BIOS is slightly more power hungry, but offers higher performance at the same time, which is a fair trade-off. Other vendors increase the voltage for their factory overclock or compromise on the VRM design, which negatively affects power efficiency, not a problem with the Colorful iGame RTX 3080 Vulcan OC.
Overclocking on our sample with the default BIOS worked similarly to other RTX 3080 cards: gains are limited because the board power limit will cap the frequencies you can achieve. That"s also a big drawback of the default BIOS. Its manual adjustment power limit is set to 340 W, which is 30 W below the Founders Edition—strange. With the Turbo BIOS on the other hand, OC yielded excellent results because it lets you set a 400 W power limit, which is higher than most other RTX 3080 cards I"ve tested. At 400 W, overclocking potential was the best of all RTX 3080 cards so far: 7.8%, which is really close to what the stock RTX 3090 can achieve, at much higher pricing. I still feel the Vulcan OC could handle much more power, its 22+4 VRM configuration is stronger than on any other card. Colorful maybe can release an optional XOC BIOS with an even higher power limit, similar to what EVGA has been doing with their FTW3.
Colorful is asking $880 for the iGame RTX 3080 Vulcan OC, which is a steep $180 premium over the Founders Edition. No doubt, the big cooler, much better VRM circuitry, and LCD display cost money, but I still find it too expensive. The factory overclock can justify a few percent, but not 20%. ASUS is asking $850 for the STRIX, EVGA wants $810 for the FTW3 Ultra, and the AORUS Master is $850. A price point much closer to $800 would definitely help the Vulcan, but at this time, all RTX 3080s everywhere are sold out, and people are willing to pay much much more, so my pricing considerations really don"t matter.

Having owned the Aorus RTX 3080 Master 12G card for approximately two weeks, I am compelled to alert potential buyers about this purchase. The initial 4-star rating has been revised to a 5-star with the VR stutter problem having been resolved. My first card, the Zotac RTX 3080 Trinity 12G, is incredibly compact and performs smoothly; it has a tasteful design that packs just enough LEDs. My second 3000 series card, the MSI RTX 3080 12G, is a rather bland card. It forces BIOS reset during installation with the x570 Taichi board that is paired with an AMD 3950x CPU. Everything sounds easy, but removing the BIOS battery from this particular board is difficult after all attempts to reset BIOS have failed. Also, they certainly make the MSI (and the EVGA) card as bland as it comes. The MSI card simply would not post out of the box with the AMD CPU although the card is a solid performer after updates. I appreciate that the MSI kit comes with an anti-tilt/horizontal support. By the way, these cards do not post when paired with the PCI-E 3.0 riser cables on AMD x570 motherboards (none of these work in vertical mount). Only the Aorus z390 Pro Intel based CPU successfully posts through the Thermaltake riser cable. To continue, the Aorus Master has the best set of features among the three cards. It has plenty of LEDs along with a generous number of output options with generous display ports and HDMI options. The Aorus Master also comes with a very useful a display panel and clocks at 1830 Mhz out of the box. Due to the gigantic radiator design, thermals stay impressively low. However, there are two important problems: 1) This card is LARGE and takes up an additional PCI-E slot whereas other RTX 3080 cards do not, and 2) VR performance is simply horrible in the first weeks of operation. I purchase the card specifically to implement VR technology on my Aorus build. However, jitters and stutters in the headset display render this card unsuitable for even simple VR titles. When I swap out this card with the GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme, graphics normalize. The visual display output feels as smooth as silk with the latter!
The most recent NVidia game update (with a clean installation) finally fixes VR headset display problems. The RTX 3080 has been released on the market for quite some time, and the 12G version is its latest and slightly augmented version. Kudos to Aorus and Zotac for having exceeded the Founder"s Edition and for pushing reliable performance to extreme thermal solution. The new RTX 3080 holds promise of solid performance in this enormous segment of VR computing and of future online interactions. After having waited for more than a year since the initial launch of the RTX 3080 and after having endured the fiasco of NVidia problematic launches, supply problems and the consumer price gouging, the transition from the GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme to the RTX 3080 12G has been frustrating. Having tried all sorts of solutions from updating BIOS (that I do not recommend), Windows, Oculus software updates to prioritizing performance manually for Oculus Applications to running a debugging window in the background, nothing worked. The fix for me (although may not be the solution for everyone) is to ensure the implementation of the game update through the NVidia GeForce Experience (not merely an applications and productivity update) with clean installation. This measure was my very first solution when the card was installed, but it did not work initially. Please do your due diligence BEFORE buying. In this case, the newer RTX 3080 cards are still not vastly better than their predecessor in VR, but at least they have stopped giving me headaches when operating the VR headset. And given the current market, factoring in inflation, the RTX 3080 12G card that goes between $800-1000 is a very compelling purchase not to mention the fact that any cards operating above this level for the current gaming industry constitutes an overkill and a complete waste of money.

To evaluate the performance of display devices, several metrics are commonly used, such as response time, CR, color gamut, panel flexibility, viewing angle, resolution density, peak brightness, lifetime, among others. Here we compare LCD and OLED devices based on these metrics one by one.
The last finding is somehow counter to the intuition that a LCD should have a more severe motion picture image blur, as its response time is approximately 1000 × slower than that of an OLED (ms vs. μs). To validate this prediction, Chen et al.
If we want to further suppress image blur to an unnoticeable level (MPRT<2 ms), decreasing the duty ratio (for LCDs, this is the on-time ratio of the backlight, called scanning backlight or blinking backlight) is mostly adopted
As Figure 6 depicts, there are two types of surface reflections. The first one is from a direct light source, i.e., the sun or a light bulb, denoted as A1. Its reflection is fairly specular, and in practice, we can avoid this reflection (i.e., strong glare from direct sun) by simply adjusting the display position or viewing direction. However, the second reflection, denoted as A2, is quite difficult to avoid. It comes from an extended background light source, such as a clear sky or scattered ceiling light. In our analysis, we mainly focus on the second reflection (A2).
To investigate the ACR, we have to clarify the reflectance first. A large TV is often operated by remote control, so touchscreen functionality is not required. As a result, an anti-reflection coating is commonly adopted. Let us assume that the reflectance is 1.2% for both LCD and OLED TVs. For the peak brightness and CR, different TV makers have their own specifications. Here, without losing generality, let us use the following brands as examples for comparison: LCD peak brightness=1200 nits, LCD CR=5000:1 (Sony 75″ X940E LCD TV); OLED peak brightness=600 nits, and OLED CR=infinity (Sony 77″ A1E OLED TV). The obtained ACR for both LCD and OLED TVs is plotted in Figure 7a. As expected, OLEDs have a much higher ACR in the low illuminance region (dark room) but drop sharply as ambient light gets brighter. At 63 lux, OLEDs have the same ACR as LCDs. Beyond 63 lux, LCDs take over. In many countries, 60 lux is the typical lighting condition in a family living room. This implies that LCDs have a higher ACR when the ambient light is brighter than 60 lux, such as in office lighting (320–500 lux) and a living room with the window shades or curtain open. Please note that, in our simulation, we used the real peak brightness of LCDs (1200 nits) and OLEDs (600 nits). In most cases, the displayed contents could vary from black to white. If we consider a typical 50% average picture level (i.e., 600 nits for LCDs vs. 300 nits for OLEDs), then the crossover point drops to 31 lux (not shown here), and LCDs are even more favorable. This is because the on-state brightness plays an important role to the ACR, as Equation (2) shows.

Recently, an LCD panel with an in-cell polarizer was proposed to decouple the depolarization effect of the LC layer and color filtersFigure 7b. Now, the crossover point takes place at 16 lux, which continues to favor LCDs.
For mobile displays, such as smartphones, touch functionality is required. Thus the outer surface is often subject to fingerprints, grease and other contaminants. Therefore, only a simple grade AR coating is used, and the total surface reflectance amounts to ~4.4%. Let us use the FFS LCD as an example for comparison with an OLED. The following parameters are used in our simulations: the LCD peak brightness is 600 nits and CR is 2000:1, while the OLED peak brightness is 500 nits and CR is infinity. Figure 8a depicts the calculated results, where the intersection occurs at 107 lux, which corresponds to a very dark overcast day. If the newly proposed structure with an in-cell polarizer is used, the FFS LCD could attain a 3000:1 CRFigure 8b), corresponding to an office building hallway or restroom lighting. For reference, a typical office light is in the range of 320–500 luxFigure 8 depicts, OLEDs have a superior ACR under dark ambient conditions, but this advantage gradually diminishes as the ambient light increases. This was indeed experimentally confirmed by LG Display

For conventional LCDs employing a WLED backlight, the yellow spectrum generated by YAG (yttrium aluminum garnet) phosphor is too broad to become highly saturated RGB primary colors, as shown in Figure 9aTable 2. The first choice is the RG-phosphor-converted WLEDFigure 9b, the red and green emission spectra are well separated; still, the green spectrum (generated by β-sialon:Eu2+ phosphor) is fairly broad and red spectrum (generated by K2SiF6:Mn4+ (potassium silicofluoride, KSF) phosphor) is not deep enough, leading to 70%–80% Rec. 2020, depending on the color filters used.
A QD-enhanced backlight (e.g., quantum dot enhancement film, QDEF) offers another option for a wide color gamutFigure 9c), so that high purity RGB colors can be realized and a color gamut of ~90% Rec. 2020 can be achieved. One safety concern is that some high-performance QDs contain the heavy metal Cd. To be compatible with the restriction of hazardous substances, the maximum cadmium content should be under 100 ppm in any consumer electronic product
Recently, a new LED technology, called the Vivid Color LED, was demonstratedFigure 9d), which leads to an unprecedented color gamut (~98% Rec. 2020) together with specially designed color filters. Such a color gamut is comparable to that of laser-lit displays but without laser speckles. Moreover, the Vivid Color LED is heavy-metal free and shows good thermal stability. If the efficiency and cost can be further improved, it would be a perfect candidate for an LCD backlight.
A color filter array is another effective approach to enhance the color gamut of an OLED. For example, in 2017, AUO demonstrated a 5-inch top-emission OLED panel with 95% Rec. 2020. In this design, so-called symmetric panel stacking with a color filter is employed to generate purer RGB primary colors
As mentioned earlier, TFT LCDs are a fairly mature technology. They can be operated for >10 years without noticeable performance degradation. However, OLEDs are more sensitive to moisture and oxygen than LCDs. Thus their lifetime, especially for blue OLEDs, is still an issue. For mobile displays, this is not a critical issue because the expected usage of a smartphone is approximately 2–3 years. However, for large TVs, a lifetime of >30 000 h (>10 years) has become the normal expectation for consumers.
Here we focus on two types of lifetime: storage and operational. To enable a 10-year storage lifetime, according to the analysis−6 g (m2-day)−1 and 1 × 10−5 cm3 (m2-day)−1, respectively. To achieve these values, organic and/or inorganic thin films have been developed to effectively protect the OLED and lengthen its storage lifetime. Meanwhile, it is compatible to flexible substrates and favors a thinner display profile
The next type of lifetime is operational lifetime. Owing to material degradation, OLED luminance will decrease and voltage will increase after long-term drivingT50) can be as long as >80 000 h with a 1000 cd m−2 luminanceT50, half lifetime) with an initial luminance of 1000 nits. However, this is still ~20 × shorter than that of red and green phosphorescent OLEDs
To further enhance the lifetime of the blue OLED, the NTU group has developed new ETL and TTF-EML materials together with an optimized layer structure and double EML structureFigure 10a shows the luminance decay curves of such a blue OLED under different initial luminance values (5000, 10 000, and 15 000 nits). From Figure 10b, the estimated T50 at 1000 nits of this blue OLED is ~56 000 h (~6–7 years)
Power consumption is equally important as other metrics. For LCDs, power consumption consists of two parts: the backlight and driving electronics. The ratio between these two depends on the display size and resolution density. For a 55″ 4K LCD TV, the backlight occupies approximately 90% of the total power consumption. To make full use of the backlight, a dual brightness enhancement film is commonly embedded to recycle mismatched polarized light
The power efficiency of an OLED is generally limited by the extraction efficiency (ηext~20%). To improve the power efficiency, multiple approaches can be used, such as a microlens array, a corrugated structure with a high refractive index substrateFigure 11 shows the power efficiencies of white, green, red and blue phosphorescent as well as blue fluorescent/TTF OLEDs over time. For OLEDs with fluorescent emitters in the 1980s and 1990s, the power efficiency was limited by the IQE, typically <10 lm W−1(Refs. 41, 114, 115, 116, 117, 118). With the incorporation of phosphorescent emitters in the ~2000 s, the power efficiency was significantly improved owing to the materials and device engineering−1 was demonstrated in 2011 (Ref. 127), which showed a >100 × improvement compared with that of the basic two-layer device proposed in 1987 (1.5 lm W−1 in Ref. 41). A white OLED with a power efficiency >100 lm W−1 was also demonstrated, which was comparable to the power efficiency of a LCD backlight. For red and blue OLEDs, their power efficiencies are generally lower than that of the green OLED due to their lower photopic sensitivity function, and there is a tradeoff between color saturation and power efficiency. Note, we separated the performances of blue phosphorescent and fluorescent/TTF OLEDs. For the blue phosphorescent OLEDs, although the power efficiency can be as high as ~80 lm W−1, the operation lifetime is short and color is sky-blue. For display applications, the blue TTF OLED is the favored choice, with an acceptable lifetime and color but a much lower power efficiency (16 lm W−1) than its phosphorescent counterpartFigure 11 shows.
To compare the power consumption of LCDs and OLEDs with the same resolution density, the displayed contents should be considered as well. In general, OLEDs are more efficient than LCDs for displaying dark images because black pixels consume little power for an emissive display, while LCDs are more efficient than OLEDs at displaying bright images. Flexible displays have a long history and have been attempted by many companies, but this technology has only recently begun to see commercial implementations for consumer electronics
In addition to the aforementioned six display metrics, other parameters are equally important. For example, high-resolution density has become a standard for all high-end display devices. Currently, LCD is taking the lead in consumer electronic products. Eight-hundred ppi or even >1000 ppi LCDs have already been demonstrated and commercialized, such as in the Sony 5.5″ 4k Smartphone Xperia Z5 Premium. The resolution of RGB OLEDs is limited by the physical dimension of the fine-pitch shadow mask. To compete with LCDs, most OLED displays use the PenTile RGB subpixel matrix scheme
The viewing angle is another important property that defines the viewing experience at large oblique angles, which is quite critical for multi-viewer applications. OLEDs are self-emissive and have an angular distribution that is much broader than that of LCDs. For instance, at a 30° viewing angle, the OLED brightness only decreases by 30%, whereas the LCD brightness decrease exceeds 50%. To widen an LCD’s viewing angle, three options can be used. (1) Remove the brightness-enhancement film in the backlight system. The tradeoff is decreased on-axis brightness
In addition to brightness, color, grayscale and the CR also vary with the viewing angle, known as color shift and gamma shift. In these aspects, LCDs and OLEDs have different mechanisms. For LCDs, they are induced by the anisotropic property of the LC material, which could be compensated for with uniaxial or biaxial films
Cost is another key factor for consumers. LCDs have been the topic of extensive investigation and investment, whereas OLED technology is emerging and its fabrication yield and capability are still far behind LCDs. As a result, the price of OLEDs is about twice as high as that of LCDs, especially for large displays. As more investment is made in OLEDs and more advanced fabrication technology is developed, such as ink-jet printing

The RTX 3080 really doesn"t need any introduction. This is the de facto card to get if you plan to run current generation games at 4K, since it"s up to 50% faster than the previous generation RTX 2080 SUPER and doesn"t command the exorbitant price of the RTX 3080 Ti or RTX 3090.
