The three-row Jeep® Grand Cherokee L has been a huge success for the American adventure brand since debuting halfway through the 2021 model year. Now entering its third model year of existence, the Grand Cherokee L (WL75) returns mostly unchanged but with a few new tricks under its sleeves.
The two other changes for 2023, are for those audiophiles out there. Jeep is now offering its 9-speaker Alpine premium audio system as a standalone option on Limited models. The Alpine system includes a subwoofer and 506-watt amplifier with active noise control. For those looking for the optimum audio performance, the 19-speaker McIntosh® MX950 Entertainment System is now a standalone option for Overland and Summit models. The MX950 system includes a 17-channel amplifier delivering up to 950-watts of power, 19 custom-designed speakers, and a 10-inch subwoofer.
The Grand Cherokee L Laredo features the award-winning Uconnect 5 infotainment system with a 10.1-inch digital gauge cluster and an 8.4-inch high-definition touchscreen. The system offers a customizable, one-touch home screen, five user profiles, and standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. To enhance connectivity, the Grand Cherokee L delivers a class-leading total of 12 USB Type-A and new Type-C ports for all three rows. Third-row single USB ports are available on Laredo models.
Laredo is powered by the standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine with 290 horsepower and 257 lb.-ft. of torque paired with the standard TorqueFlite 8-speed transmission. It also features standard 18-inch aluminum wheels, heated fold-away mirrors with a heating element and blind spot indicator, roof rails, cloth seats with power eight-way driver and manual front-passenger with driver lumbar adjuster, automatic dual-zone automatic temperature controls, all-new leather-wrapped heated steering wheel with audio control and paddle shifters, and integrated voice command with Bluetooth.
The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Laredo has a U.S. Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $41,395 for the 4×2 version and $43,395 for the 4×4 model.
Heated seats in the first two rows with three-level configurable controls for personalized passenger comfort are standard on Limited, Overland and Summit models. The Limited model also features a 6-speaker sound system with active noise cancellation and single-color ambient interior lighting for the instrument panel and front and rear doors.
Built for both on- and off-road adventures, the Grand Cherokee L Overland model has a starting U.S. MSRP of $57,910 for the 4×2 Pentastar V6 model. Starting U.S. MSRP for a 4×4 Overland model with the Pentastar V6 is $59,910. When equipped with the optional 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine that delivers 357 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque and a class-leading towing capacity of up to 7,200 lbs., and adds an additional $3,995 to the Overland 4×4’s price.
The Overland 4×4 model adds Jeep’s Quadra-Trac II system, which adjusts torque distribution and will continue to reactively make corrections if tire slip occurs. When wheel slippage is detected, as much as 100% of available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction.
Standard exterior upgrades for Overland include 20-inch aluminum wheels with Black Noise pockets, a new, unique Overland appearance, chrome front tow hooks, Gloss Black roof rack with Bright Stainless insert, rain-sensing windshield wipers, trailer towing, approach-lit door handles, rearview mirror puddle lighting, power-folding multifunctional Gloss Black mirrors with Bright Chrome insert, auto-tilt down in reverse, auto-dimming glass on driver’s side and courtesy lighting, windshield wiper deicer and passive entry. A Gloss Black roof is available for the first time on Overland models.
Length-adjustable cushions for the front row are introduced on Overland models. A power-folding third-row bench seat is also standard. Overland also features a new electronic remote release in the rear cargo area to quickly and effortlessly fold the second-row flat.
For customers seeking the peak of capability and luxury in an SUV, with premium materials and class-exclusive features, the state-of-the-art Grand Cherokee L Summit starts at a U.S. MSRP of $62,070 for 4×2 and $64,070 for 4×4 models.
The Summit is packed with premium appointments, such as Nappa leather seats with quilted seat bolsters and perforated seat inserts on all three rows, Absolute Oak wood and leather-wrapped multifunctional steering wheel, and Berber floor mats. First-row seats with new power 16-way adjustable position with memory and lumbar are standard on Summit. Also offered on Grand Cherokee Summit is front-row seat massage that includes 5 customizable profiles with 3 levels of pressure intensity.
Passenger comfort is elevated in Summit models with 4-zone automatic temperature control, which has the capability to select different fan levels and modes for individual passengers in the first and second rows. The system also offers 4 different temperature settings. Additional interior touches unique to the Summit model include a new, second-row floor console with 2 illuminated cup holders and a two-tier armrest with additional storage for mobile devices.
Exterior touches include 20-inch polished cast-aluminum wheels in Mid-Gloss Clear, unique Summit-specific LED fog lamps, power-folding multifunction Gloss Black mirrors with a Platinum insert and new 360-degree camera, illuminated door sills and a roof rack with Fine Silver rails and Gloss Black insert.
The Summit Reserve Package sets the benchmark for luxury in the full-size SUV segment. Premium hand-wrapped, quilted Palermo leather, ventilated front and second-row seats, memory and massage front seats and choice of a new Tupelo interior color add distinguishable details to the model.
Also unique to the Summit Reserve Package is genuine open-pore Waxed Walnut wood and premium, wrapped, suede-like fabric on the A-pillars and headliner. Summit Reserve models also have 21-inch wheels that come standard. Also standard is superior audio delivered through the 950-watt, 19-speaker McIntosh audio sound system.
For those who hate chrome and prefer a more sinister-looking for their Grand Cherokee L, there are three dark packages available for the 2023 model year.
The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Altitudeis based on the entry-level Laredo model and adds distinct Black Gloss appearance details, including 20-inch Gloss Black aluminum wheels, Gloss Black exterior accents, badging, roof rails, and a unique seven-slot grille. Other functional features include remote start, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, wireless charging pad, adjustable height liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, a 115-volt power outlet, and third-row USB ports.
For those looking for more luxury, the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Limited Black is the sweet spot in the Grand Cherokee L lineup. Adding the same Gloss Black accents from the Altitude to the Limited models, the Limited Black gives customers premium features like LED fog lamps, Capri leather seats, 8-way power driver seat with memory, 4-way driver/front-passenger lumbar adjuster with memory, and Selec-Terrain traction management system, which offers five available terrain modes (Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, Mud/Sand) on 4×4 models.
For those looking for the most premium entry in comfort and in technology, look no further than the High Altitude model. Those who choose a Summit or Summit Reserve model can opt for 21-inch Gloss Black painted wheels and the rest of the other dark packages accents.
While the Trailhawk model is exclusively for the two-row Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in (PHEV) in 2023, the Grand Cherokee L does offer a Trail-Rated option once again for 2023. The Overland Off-Road Package includes skid plates for the fuel tank, transfer case, underbody, and front suspension, electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD) rear axle, 18-in. polished aluminum wheels, all-season tires, and Trail Rated badge.
Standard is the all-aluminum 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, rated at 293 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. Lauded for its power and refinement, the 60-degree angle between the Pentastar V6’s cylinder banks makes it inherently smooth running, augmented by accessories that bolt directly to the engine block. A 7-time winner of the Wards 10-Best Engines and Propulsion Systems award, the Pentastar V6 engine is compact, with features such as exhaust manifolds integrated into the cylinder heads.

Such is the case with the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The two-row that arrived a few months ago offers the option to have another screen for the front passenger, which is exclusive for the most expensive Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve.
The said passenger screen will be available on the 2022 Grand Cherokee L as well, but a rumor from Mopar Insiders is telling us that it will become optional to other trim levels.
According to Mopar Insiders, the front passenger screen will become optional for 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Limited, Overland, and Summit models. It will carry the RJA option code and is said to be priced at $1,095. However, that doesn"t seem to be the case as of date.
Of note, we checked Jeep"s 2022 configurator but the front passenger screen is only available for the Summit Reserve of both two- and three-row Cherokees. No option has been added for the said Limited, Overland, and Summit models at the time of this writing.
The front passenger screen measures 10.25 inches and has four main techie functions. It can serve as a "Co-Pilot" for navigation and device management, for entertainment (via HDMI), Amazon"s Fire TV for Auto, and as a display for the exterior cameras. The HDMI plug allows smartphone mirroring and other UConnect 5 system functions.
Perhaps most notable among these features will be what FCA in its pre-merger Jan. 7 news release called “Hands-free Active Driving Assist.” The OEM said it would start selling the tech late this year on the 2022 Grand Cherokee L.
Under such SAE Level 2 autonomy, a vehicle can control its speed and steering, but the driver is required to actively supervise and be ready to take control. Some systems permit the driver to take their hands off the wheel during this process.
“It offers hands-free driving at all speeds and lane centering on approved roadways for even greater driving convenience,” Jeep wrote earlier this month. “The system also will predictively slow the vehicle down in tight curves and automatically resume control after the driver overrides and verifies that he or she is paying attention to the road.”
However, Jeep said the 2021 Grand Cherokee L will offer a “Active Driving Assist” system standard on Summit trims and as an option on Overland trims. This represents another piece of Level 2 autonomy, though this one will require the driver to keep their hands on the wheel.
“The Grand Cherokee L is available with Active Driving Assist for hands-on-wheel and eyes-on-road automated driving using lane-centering with adaptive cruise control,” Jeep wrote. “The system uses multiple sensors, including radars and cameras to dictate appropriate roads for the technology.”
Both the Summit and Overland trims will also offer a Night Vision Camera option. According to Jeep, infrared sensors on the vehicle search for the heat given off by pedestrians and animals up to 219 yards away. This could cut into some repairers’ deer season business.
“When located, an alert with their positions relative to the vehicle are outlined in the instrument cluster directly in front of the driver,” Jeep wrote.
Parallel and perpendicular parking assist will also come standard on the Summit. According to Jeep, this one relies on ultrasonic sensors. “FCA is the first automaker to use this technology with a live, dedicated view on the infotainment screen for easy viewing,” the OEM said. (Jeep issued the press release pre-merger.)
Jeep will also offer the optional capability to toggle the Grand Cherokee L rearview mirror between a standard view and a digital view using a 9.2-inch LCD screen and a rear-facing camera. This will be a first for a production Jeep model, according to the OEM.
Drivers can also purchase a Jeep-first full-color head-up display on the Overland or higher trims. Jeep described the feature as projecting information (speed, navigation, etc.) on up to a 10-inch area on the windshield.
“The all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offers more than 110 safety and security features, including innovative applications of technologies that refine the connection between driver, vehicle and the road,” Jeep wrote.
“… The Grand Cherokee L arrives with a class-leading suite of features that deliver on the promise of driving confidence, for which the Jeep brand is renowned. These features enhance a driver’s field of vision, help make instrumentation easier to see and enable driver-assist capabilities that accommodate collision avoidance.”
“The camera is positioned on the headliner between the second- and third-row seats,” Jeep wrote. “Three infrared lights surround the camera and illuminate the cabin in low-light conditions. The system automatically switches between day and night modes for added visibility and convenience.”
“For the first time, a premium, full suite of LED lighting is standard on all Jeep Grand Cherokee trim levels, which allowed for design flexibility and helped to shape the identity of the vehicle,” Jeep wrote. Approach-lit door handles and rearview mirror puddle lighting also come standard on the Summit and Overland trims.
“True ambient lighting with a five-color selection, an FCA first, casts an inviting glow along the entire instrument panel, as well as the front and rear doors,” Jeep wrote.
“For the first time in an FCA vehicle, the second- and third-row vents, now wider and slimmer, are placed in the pillars, as opposed to overhead, to better target passenger comfort zones without compromising headroom or visibility,” Jeep wrote.

The Grand Cherokee uses an all-new architecture, with front and rear independent suspensions. An available air suspension will enable the driver to lower the vehicle for access and raise it to a 11.3-inch maximum ground clearance.
The core powertrains carry over from the current two-row Grand Cherokee. This means the base engine is the ubiquitous 293-hp, 3.6-liter V6 that is used throughout the Stellantis portfolio. As with several other models, the step up is a 5.7-liter V8, here putting out 357 hp. Both engines are mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Tow capacities are up to 6,200 pounds for the V6 and up to 7,200 pounds for the V8—same as the Grand Cherokee L.
The new 4xe plug-in hybrid version uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It has a 400-volt, 17-kWh battery mounted underneath the vehicle, where it is protected by skid plates. The battery is waterproof, and Jeep claims the 4xe can ford water up to 24 inches deep. Total power is 375 hp and 470 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful in the lineup. The 4xe has a 6,000-pound tow capacity and estimated 25-mile electric-only range. There are three driver-selectable modes to determine how the electric power is used: hybrid to combine electric and gas power, electric to draw strictly from the battery, and eSave to preserve or charge the battery for later use.
Not all versions have a low range. Many Grand Cherokees will come with all-wheel-drive. Only off-road oriented versions will come with low-range gearing and a third system adds a locking rear differential. To further tailor the SUV to road or trail conditions, there are several driver-selectable modes that adjust the engine, transmission, steering, and on some variations, the ride height. These modes include Auto, Sport, Sand/Mud, Rock, and Snow.

Available in the Grand Cherokee Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit and Summit Reserve, the 4xe propulsion system combines two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, 2.0-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder engine and TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission for maximum efficiency and capability.
Overall, the 4xe system delivers 375 horsepower (280 kW) and 470 lb.-ft. (637 Nm) of torque. The Grand Cherokee 4xe, targeting an estimated 25 miles (40 km) of all-electric range, returns an estimated 57 MPGe and has an estimated total range of more than 440 miles (708 km).
The fuel-efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine is part of Stellantis’s Global Medium Engine family. The high-tech, direct-injection engine uses a twin-scroll, low-inertia turbocharger mounted directly to the cylinder head. Efficiency is enhanced via the use of electric power steering and an electrically driven air conditioning compressor, removing those loads from the engine.
A clutch is mounted between the engine and the motor. When the system operates in electric-only mode this clutch is open so there is no mechanical linkage between the engine and the e-motor. When the clutch is closed, combined torque from the 2.0-liter engine and the e-motor flow through the automatic transmission. A variable clutch mounted behind the e-motor manages engagement with the transmission to improve drivability and efficiency.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe carries a 400-volt, 17-kWh EV battery. The battery units and controls mount underneath the vehicle, packaged under the floor and protected by a series of skid plates.
The battery pack system includes a dedicated heating and cooling circuit to keep the battery at its optimum temperature for best performance. The system includes a dedicated heater unit and a chiller that uses the Grand Cherokee’s air-conditioning refrigerant to reduce coolant temperature when needed.
The Grand Cherokee’s 4xe system also includes an Integrated Dual Charging Module (ICDM) that combines a battery charger and a DC/DC converter in a single, compact unit and a Power Inverter Module (PIM) that is reduced in size. These are mounted under the body and protected with steel shields.
With E Selec modes, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe driver can tailor the hybrid powertrain to best suit each trip, whether it be commuting, off-roading or long-distance travel.
Regenerative braking is part of the 4xe system. When the driver steps on the brake pedal, the powertrain control engages the maximum available regenerative braking, up to 0.25 g, from the electric motors to slow the vehicle, augmented with the Grand Cherokee’s traditional friction brakes. With 4x4 engaged, all four wheels feed torque for regenerative braking, maximizing the energy recovery. Electricity from regenerative braking is fed to the battery pack to maintain or increase the state of charge.
A driver-selectable Max Regen feature deploys a more assertive regenerative braking calibration when the vehicle sees zero throttle input from the driver (coasting). Max Regen can slow the Grand Cherokee 4xe faster than standard regenerative braking and generate more electricity for the battery pack.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee delivers unrivaled capability along with composed on-road driving dynamics. That legendary off-road capability begins courtesy of three 4x4 systems – Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II with rear electronic limited slip-differential (eLSD). All three systems are equipped with an active transfer case to improve traction by moving torque to work with the wheel with the most grip.
The class-exclusive Jeep Quadra-Lift air suspension, now with electronic semi-active damping, delivers up to class-leading 11.3 inches (28.7 cm) of ground clearance and 24 inches (61 cm) of water fording. The system automatically adjusts the shock tuning to changing road conditions for enhanced comfort, stability and control, or may be controlled manually with console controls, and features five height settings for optimum ride performance.
New for the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 is front-axle disconnect. If the vehicle senses that road conditions do not require all-wheel drive, the front-axle disconnect automatically places the Grand Cherokee in two-wheel drive, reducing drag on the driveline and improving fuel economy. Four-wheel drive automatically re-engages when the vehicle senses it is needed.
The new Trailhawk features standard all-terrain tires, integrated off-road camera, Quadra-Lift air suspension with up to 11.3 inches (28.7cm) of ground clearance, improved approach, departure and breakover angles and the Quadra-Drive II active transfer case with rear eLSD and Selec-Terrain.

Fuel-saving engine start-stop (ESS) technology is standard on the Pentastar V-6. The ESS system has been upgraded and refined for the Grand Cherokee. Changes include a pressure reserve element in the eight-speed transmission, which provides dedicated transmission fluid to the shift elements at engine restart for a quick launch. Refined powertrain controls and new starter technology minimize early engine restarts from minor movements of the driver’s foot on the brake pedal. Restart noise, vibration and harshness have been reduced via revised controls and switchable engine mounts.
The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is rated for a towing capacity of up to 6,200 pounds (2,812 kg) and an estimated class-leading driving range of more than 500 miles. VVT with dual-independent cam phasing enables better fuel efficiency across a wide torque band in the Pentastar V-6 engine. Nearly 90% of the engine’s peak torque is available from 1,800 to 6,400 rpm – an important consideration when towing or hauling.
Buyers who want more power can opt for the award-winning 5.7-liter V-8, rated at 357 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque delivered over a broad power band. The V-8 delivers performance and efficiency with VVT and Fuel Saver Technology (cylinder deactivation). With Fuel Saver Technology, the engine control computer turns off fuel and spark and closes the valves to four of the engine’s cylinders during light-load operation, such as highway cruising, when full power is not needed. The system immediately re-engages the deactivated cylinders when the driver presses on the accelerator pedal. The 5.7-liter V-8 has a class-leading towing capacity of up to 7,200 pounds (3,265 kg).
The Grand Cherokee’s V-8 engine uses cylinder shut-off technology that deactivates four cylinders during light acceleration or cruising situations on the highway. The system is active in an expanded region with respect to the previous generations and is unnoticeable to the driver. It provides V-8 power for acceleration and heavy loads and four-cylinder operation when the torque requirement is less than the maximum available from four cylinders. Depending on the driving scenario, cylinder shutoff can increase fuel economy from 5 to 20 percent. Fuel economy is further enhanced with VVT technology that reduces the engine’s pumping work by closing the intake valve later and by increasing the expansion process of the combustion event. This allows more energy to be transferred to the wheels instead of being lost out of the exhaust as heat. VVT also improves engine breathing, which improves engine efficiency and power.
New for the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4x4 is front-axle disconnect. If the vehicle senses that road conditions do not require all-wheel drive, the front-axle disconnect automatically places the Grand Cherokee in two-wheel drive, reducing drag on the driveline and improving fuel economy. Four-wheel drive automatically re-engages when the vehicle senses it is needed.

While the two-row Grand Cherokee and three-row Grand Cherokee L share the same overall width of 84.6 inches (215 cm), the two-row Grand Cherokee has a 116.7-inch (296.4 cm) wheelbase compared with the Grand Cherokee L’s 121.7-inch (309 cm) wheelbase, 5.0 inches (12.7 cm) shorter. In overall length the two-row is 193.5 inches (491 cm) compared to the Grand Cherokee L’s 204.9 inches (520.4 cm), an 11.4-inch (28.9 cm) reduction. Without a third row, the fifth-generation two-row package size was optimized to support Jeep capability and 4xe electrification without any customer compromise.
The two-row Grand Cherokee – the most 4x4-capable Grand Cherokee yet – is the second vehicle in this family of capable Jeep SUVs to be built on the new architecture, following the first-ever three-row Grand Cherokee L launched earlier this year. Early in 2022, the third and final phase will begin when the first-ever electrified Grand Cherokee 4xe launches in North America, followed later in the year in global markets.
The all-new 4xe powertrain, with 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, two electric motors and eight-speed automatic, is available on Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit and Summit Reserve.

Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database.Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler"s employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee"s release until late 1992Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle handling so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle.model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr.
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.
The original Grand Cherokee was launched in 1992 as a 1993 model year vehicle in the luxury SUV segment. The "ZJ" models, manufactured from 1992 to 1998, originally came in three trim levels: base (also known as SE), Laredo, and Limited, subsequent trims were added, included Orvis (MY 95–98), TSI (MY97–98). The base model included features such as full instrumentation, cloth interior, and a standard five-speed manual transmission, while gaining the moniker "SE" name for the 1994 model year. Power windows and locks were not standard equipment on the base trim. The minimal price tag differential resulted in low consumer demand, and as a result, the low-line model was eventually discontinued. Additional standard features included a driver-side airbag and four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS). The Laredo was the mid-scale model with standard features that included power windows, power door locks, cruise control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Exterior features included medium-grey plastic paneling on the lower body and five-spoke alloy wheels. The Limited was the premium model, featuring body-color lower body paneling, and gold exterior accents. The Limited also boasted standard features such as leather seating, heated mirrors, front power seats, a keyless entry system, woodgrain interior appliqué, lace style alloy wheels, a driver information center with a compass, digitized climate control, an electrochromic rearview mirror, and Jensen brand stereo with multi-band equalizer. By 1996 the options list grew to include heated seats. Standard was the 4.0, with the 5.2 V8 (and 5.9 in 1998) being optional, as with other models. Package groups with the various trim levels included: fog lamps, skid plates, as well as convenience, lighting, luxury, power, security, and trailer towing packages.
When it was first introduced in April 1992 as an early 1993 model year vehicle, the Grand Cherokee only had one powertrain choice: the 4.0-liter AMC-derived straight-six engine that made 190 horsepower (193 PS; 142 kW). This became the "volume" engine for the Grand Cherokee. Transmission choices included a four-speed automatic transmission (early production ZJs used the AW4—the A500SE (later 42RE) replaced the AW4 during the latter half of the 1993 model year) or an Aisin AX15 manual transmission. Low demand for the manual transmission resulted in its discontinuation after 1994, but European-market ZJs retained it when coupled to the diesel engine (which was unavailable in North America). The drive train choices included rear-wheel drive or four-wheel-drive. In 1995, the engine dropped 5 horsepower (5 PS; 4 kW) to 185 horsepower (188 PS; 138 kW) due to new EPA regulations imposed on the 1996 model year.
In 1997, for the 1998 model year, a variant of the top-level Grand Cherokee Limited, the "5.9 Limited" was introduced. Jeep ads claimed it to be the "world"s fastest sport utility vehicle", verified by third-party testing. The primary improvements in the 5.9 Limited version included a 245-horsepower (248 PS; 183 kW) 5.9-liter OHV V8 engine, heavy-duty 46RE automatic transmission, functional heat-extracting hood louvers, unique wide-slot body-colored grille with mesh inserts, special rocker moldings, low-restriction exhaust with three-inch chrome tip, a low-profile roof rack, and special 16" Ultra-Star wheels. The 5.9 Limited also received a 150 amp alternator and a 2-speed electric cooling fan. Other features include a standard 180-watt, 10-speaker Infinity Gold sound system with rear roof-mounted soundbar, standard sunroof, and an interior swaddled with unique "calf"s nap" soft leather and faux wood trim. Launched in September 1998, the redesigned WJ 1999 Grand Cherokee shared just 127 parts with its predecessor (mostly fasteners). The European model was coded WG. The spare tire was relocated from the side of the cargo compartment to under the floor. (Like the 1998MY ZJ, the rear tailgate glass opened separately.) The two heavy pushrod V8 engines were replaced by Chrysler"s then-new PowerTech. The new V8 engine produced less torque than the old pushrods, but was lighter, offered better fuel economy, and provided similar on-road performance figures (the 23-US-gallon (87 l; 19 imp gal) fuel tank was replaced with one of a 20.5-US-gallon (78 l; 17.1 imp gal) capacity). The straight-six engine was also updated. A redesign of the intake manifold added 10 horsepower (10 PS; 7 kW). While other Jeep vehicles used the Mopar 5 × 4.5 bolt circle, this was the first Jeep following the 1987 Chrysler buyout to receive a wider bolt pattern—5 × 5.
A notable feature available in this generation was the automatic four-wheel drive option called New Venture Gear NV247 transfer case. This two-speed chain-driven transfer case uses a gerotor, a clutch pack coupled to a hydraulic pump, to transfer torque between the front and rear axles. The transfer case contains three modes, 4-All Time, Neutral, and 4-Lo. In 4-All Time, 100% of torque is sent to the rear axle in normal conditions. If the rear axle starts spinning at a higher rate than the front axle, hydraulic pressure builds up in the gerotor and causes the clutch pack to progressively transfer torque to the front axle until both axles return to the same speed. A neutral mode is intended for towing the vehicle. In 4-Lo, the front and rear axles are locked together through a 2.72 reduction gear ratio. The NV247 transfer case is mated to front and rear axles containing Jeep"s Vari-Lok differentials. Vari-Lok differentials also use a gerotor to transfer torque between the wheels on either side of the axle. The major advantage of Quadra-Drive was that the combined transfer case and progressive locking differentials in each axle could automatically control traction between all four wheels. However, only the center differential could be permanently locked, and only in 4Lo. The Quadra-Trac II system included the NV247 transfer case with the standard open front and rear differentials.
The automatic transmission in the WJ was notable. It included three planetary gear sets rather than the two normally used in a four-speed automatic. This gave it six theoretical speeds, and it would have been the first six-speed transmission ever produced in volume, but it was programmed to only use five of these ratios. Four were used for upshifts, with a different second gear for downshifts. Although five of the six ratios were used, Chrysler decided to call it a "4-speed automatic". For MY 2001, the programming was changed to make use of all six ratios. Rather than have six forward gears, the transmission was programmed to act as a five-speed with the alternate second gear for downshifts. The rpm at 70 miles per hour (110 km/h) on a 545RFE is 2,000 rpm, 200 rpm less than the 45RFE programming. 1999 and 2000 model-year WJ owners can have their 45RFE transmission"s programming flashed to enable the extra gear as both transmissions are physically the same. (Must purchase new PCM and ABS module and program them with a fake VIN to make this work.) The 42RE 4-speed automatic remained the transmission for the inline 6 engine. It had slight changes from the previous model Grand Cherokee.
The interior was also completely redesigned. The redesign allowed for larger rear doors, and more space for rear passengers. Controls for various items like headlights, heated seats, and rear wiper were moved to more convenient locations. The electronic Vehicle Information center was moved from below the radio to above the windshield and was standard on 2000–2004 models. Limited models included automatic dual-zone climate control. A 10-CD changer was also available with the Infinity Audio package.
The Grand Cherokee received a minor facelift for 2004 including round fog lamps, a lower front fascia, and a new body color-matched inset grille design.
The WK Grand Cherokee debuted in 2004 for the 2005 model year at the 2004 New York International Auto Show with available Quadra-Drive II four-wheel drive, rear-seat DVD player and optional 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The 3.7-liter V6 engine replaced the 4.0-Liter straight-6. A Mercedes-Benz-sourced 3.0-liter V6 Common Rail Diesel (CRD) was available outside of North America from launch.
Jeep replaced the XJ-era leading-arms live-axle front suspension (found in the ZJ and WJ) with an independent double-wishbone setup like that which debuted in the 2002 Liberty. Classed as a truck-based SUV, the WH/WK Grand Cherokee offers "crossover" refinement, capability and NVH.
The 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee made its European debut at the Euro Camp Jeep in Ardèche, France. This Jeep has gained 4 stars in the Euro NCAP crash safety tests conducted in 2005.
The Grand Cherokee received a minor facelift for 2008 with revised headlights and available High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Headlamps with auto-leveling. The lower portion of the front bumper was still removable as it was from launch to increase the approach angle for off-road use. The 4.7-liter was refined, now producing 305 hp (227 kW; 309 PS), and 334 lb⋅ft (453 N⋅m; 46 kg⋅m).
The 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available with an improved 5.7-liter Hemi engine rated at 357 hp (362 PS; 266 kW) and 389 lb⋅ft (527 N⋅m; 53.8 kg⋅m) of torque. The engine uses variable valve timing to increase fuel economy.
The fourth-generation WK2 Grand Cherokee went on sale in summer 2010 as a 2011 model.2009 New York Auto Show.Chrysler Chapter 11 reorganization that same year.
Like previous generations, the WK2 Grand Cherokee chassis is a steel unibody. Unlike previous generations, it features four-wheel independent suspension for better on-road handling. The WK2 and 2011 Durango use a Chrysler designed and engineered platform/chassis that Mercedes-Benz later used for the Mercedes-Benz W166 series. The Chrysler designed platform was part of the DaimlerChrysler engineering projects that were to launch the WK2 Grand Cherokee with the Mercedes-Benz ML to follow.

For the 2022 model year, Jeep marketed the outgoing Grand Cherokee WK2 alongside the all-new Grand Cherokee WL model as the Grand Cherokee WK (not to be confused with the Grand Cherokee (WK), which was produced from 2005 until 2010). The lineup is condensed to base Laredo "E", mid-level Laredo "X", and range-topping Limited trims, with the only engine option being the base 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 gasoline engine.
The fifth generation (WL) Grand Cherokee was revealed as the three-row LWB version, Grand Cherokee L on January 7, 2021. The two-row version was revealed on September 30, 2021.Mack Avenue Assembly Complex, which is built on the grounds of the Mack Avenue Engine Complex in Detroit, Michigan. The two-row Grand Cherokee will continue to be assembled at the nearby Jefferson North Assembly Plant, where it has been assembled since its introduction in 1992 for the 1993 model year.
Three different four-wheel-drive systems will be available: Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II featuring low range, and Quadra-Drive II with low range and "Quadra Lift" air suspension system, as well as rear-wheel drive. When properly equipped, the Grand Cherokee will be able to tow up to 7,200 pounds (3,300 kg). The Grand Cherokee will also be able to ford up to two feet (24 in) of water (when equipped with the Quadra Lift air suspension system). All engines will be mated to a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission that is controlled via a rotary shift knob. The Selec Terrain system, first introduced on the Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2), will also be available on the Grand Cherokee WL, and is now controlled via a toggle switch in the center console. The Quadra Lift air suspension system is available only with the Quadra-Drive II system.
The 2021 Grand Cherokee is the third Fiat Chrysler Automobiles product to offer the new UConnect 5 infotainment suite, which will offer either an 8.4-inch or 10.1-inch high-resolution touchscreen display, SiriusXM Satellite Radio with 360L, SiriusXM Travel Link services, UConnect Guardian (powered by SiriusXM), a 4G LTE wireless Internet hotspot, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, and an integrated virtual assistant that can be activated by the phrase, "Hey UConnect", or "Hey Jeep", and can control multiple features of the vehicle, as well as provide other pertinent information.
The Grand Cherokee L went on sale in June 2021, wheelbase is 6.9 inches (175 mm) longer than the previous generation two-row model, and 5 inches (127 mm) longer than its two-row counterpart. It is equipped with an independent front and multi-link rear suspension.
The Grand Cherokee L is available in five trim levels: Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, and Summit. While all models will be powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 gasoline engine producing 290 hp (294 PS; 216 kW) and 257 lb⋅ft (348 N⋅m; 36 kg⋅m) (now assisted by the eTorque Mild Hybrid system), Overland and Summit models will also offer the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 gasoline engine with Multi Displacement System (MDS) that will produce 357 hp (362 PS; 266 kW) and 390 lb⋅ft (529 N⋅m; 54 kg⋅m) of torque.
For the first time, the Grand Cherokee will offer a 950-watt, nineteen-speaker McIntosh premium amplified surround sound audio system, replacing the previous 825-watt, eighteen-speaker Harman Kardon system on the Grand Cherokee WK2. Other new features available for the first time on a Grand Cherokee include massaging front seats, a rear seat view camera, a surround-view (360-degree) camera system, a rear view camera digital mirror, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, Qi-compatible wireless device charging, heated and ventilated second-row seats, second-row captain"s chairs, twenty-one inch tires and wheels, Level 2 semi-autonomous driving technology, and power-folding second and third-row seats.
Originally scheduled to be released for the 2021 model year, but delayed until 2022, The two-row Grand Cherokee is available in seven trim levels: Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Trailhawk, Summit, and Summit Reserve (the off-road oriented Trailhawk trim will not be available on the long wheelbase Grand Cherokee L model). Compared to the previous generation two-row Grand Cherokee, the total passenger volume increases by 4.1 cubic feet (120 L), while cargo space is up 1.4 cubic feet (40 L).
Engine choices are carried over from the previous generation Grand Cherokee (WK2), with two naturally-aspirated units, but also added is turbocharged gasoline/electric plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. The base engine on all Grand Cherokees is the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 gasoline engine, producing 290 hp (294 PS; 216 kW), and 257 lb⋅ft (348 N⋅m; 36 kg⋅m) of torque.
The optional engine, available on all Grand Cherokee trims aside from the Laredo, Altitude, and Limited, is the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 gasoline engine with the Multi Displacement System (MDS) cylinder deactivation system, producing 360 horsepower (365 PS; 268 kW), and 390 lb⋅ft (529 N⋅m; 54 kg⋅m) of torque. When equipped with the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 gasoline engine, the all-new Grand Cherokee has a maximum towing capacity of 7,200 pounds (3,300 kg). All engines, including the Plug In Hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, with Stellantis manufacturing the 850RE transmission for the 3.6-liter model, and ZF manufacturing the 8HP70 transmission for the 5.7-liter model (all transmissions are based on the design of the ZF 8HP transmission, and use a new rotary controller in the center console). In addition to rear-wheel-drive, three different four-wheel-drive systems are available, and use a new Selec-Terrain toggle controller (the Quadra Drive II four-wheel-drive system also features the Quadra-Lift air suspension system. The Quadra-Lift system can raise or lower the vehicle to different heights, and is standard on all Trailhawk models.
It is available with an optional 4xe plug-in hybrid available on the Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve trim levels. It uses an electrically assisted 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making a total of 375 hp (380 PS; 280 kW) and 470 lb⋅ft (637 N⋅m; 65 kg⋅m). The 17 kWh battery pack provides an estimated 25 miles (40 km) of range when running solely on electric power. It has the ability to tow 6,000 pounds (2,722 kg).
At the 2022 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS), Jeep introduced the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe High Altitude Edition Package. Available on both Summmit and Summit Reserve trims, the High Altitude Edition Package features dark exterior accents, unique 21-inch wheels. Following introduction on the Grand Cherokee 4xe, the High Altitude Edition Package will also be available on the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L in both Summit and Summit Reserve trims. A new exterior color, Hydro Blue Pearlcoat, will also be available on most Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee 4xe, and Grand Cherokee L models.
In 2010, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an investigation into 1993–2004 model year Jeep Grand Cherokees which involves the fuel tanks of these SUVs. In moderate- to high-energy rear collisions, the fuel tank (located behind the rear axle) could be compromised structurally, resulting in fuel leakage and fire. The NHTSA claims that it has reports of 157 deaths resulting from fires caused by Grand Cherokees crashing. Also affected are 2002–2007 Jeep Liberty models and 1986–2001 Jeep Cherokee models, which totals about 5.1 million affected vehicles.
In June 2013, Chrysler Corporation responded to the recall, agreeing to recall 2.7 million Jeeps, though eliminating both the 1986–2001 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) and 1999–2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ from the recall. The recall will include 2.7 million 1993–1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ and 2002–2007 Jeep Liberty KJ vehicles.
Two weeks prior to this recall, Chrysler Corporation claimed that the affected Jeep vehicles were safe, citing the vehicles" rates of fatal rear-impact crashes involving fire as well as their compliance with then-current requirements of FMVSS standard No. 301,trailer hitch onto the rear bumpers of the vehicles that will protect the fuel tank if the vehicle is involved in a rear impact. If an affected vehicle is not currently equipped with a trailer hitch, one will be installed onto it, and older Jeep and non-factory aftermarket trailer hitches will be replaced with one from Chrysler Corporation. Despite the recall, the market for these Jeep vehicles has not suffered.
In May 2013 there was a recall of WKs with the Quadra-Drive II and Quadra-Trac II systems. This followed cases of cars rolling away due to the transfer case moving into neutral of its own accord, and the owner not having applied the parking brake. The recall revised the Final Drive Control Module (FDCM) software. However, following the recall there were widespread reports on enthusiast web sites
In April 2016, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ordered a recall of 2014 and 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees and other cars that use an electronic gear shifter because it sometimes does not go into (or does not remain in) the park position, despite the operator"s best intentions. Consumers reported that they put the car in park and left the engine running, and then were surprised when the car rolled away under power.
The final fix was Safety Recall S27 / NHTSA 16V-240, a software update that adds an "auto park" feature that will automatically put the vehicle in park if the driver"s door is opened and the driver seatbelt is unlatched while the vehicle is stopped or moving slowly.
In July 2017, 2012–14 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs were recalled due to possible alternator failure. If the alternator fails, the vehicle may stall and/or if the alternator has a short circuit, a fire may occur.
On February 25, 2022, Stellantis and Jeep issued a stop-sale order for 2022 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L models in dealership inventory. The order was issued after it was discovered that the Radio Frequency Hub Module (RFHM) would cause some vehicles to not recognize the key fob, rendering the vehicles unable to start. This would require the vehicles to be towed to the dealership. This order only affected a "limited number of vehicles", and parts were shipped to dealerships as soon as they became available.
