The Studio Display – Apple"s new 27-inch, 5K monitor that was released alongside the new Mac Studio desktop – is one of the most difficult displays I"ve had to review. On the one hand, the price tag is sky-high for a 27-inch 5K panel that "only" promises coverage of the DCI-P3 gamut and is basically incompatible with Widows. On the other hand, it"s extremely color accurate, color uniformity is excellent, and if you doown a Mac, it offers a seamless experience previously only available on the muchmore expensive Pro Display XDR.

I have a hard time praising the Studio Display because it"s not the "baby Pro Display XDR" that I was hoping Apple would release. I"d much rather Apple had budgeted the $1,600 differently by swapping the webcam, speakers, and microphones for a miniLED backlight and a true 10-bit panel that covers 98%+ of bothDCI-P3 and AdobeRGB. That"s what I consider a "Studio" quality display.

All of the variations use the same 5K 27-inch 60Hz IPS LCD panel that promises full coverage of the Display P3 color gamut (DCI-P3 with a D65 white point), for a base price of $1,600. That will get you the standard glass version with either a tilt-adjustable stand or a VESA mount. Spend an extra $400, and you can upgrade to a nicer stand with a height adjustment mechanism similar to the one you found on the Pro Display XDR, albeit without any rotation. And if you want to go all out, you can spend another$300 for the Nano-texture glass.

I"ve tested the Pro Display XDR with Nano-texture glass, and while it"s an impressive bit of anti-reflective technology, it"s not worth the extra cash unless your studio suffers from a lot of harsh lighting. As for the mounting options, I personally would not recommend spending the extra $400 on the height-adjustable arm when you could spend half as much on a premium VESA-compatible monitor arm that will let you adjust the display any which way you want.

There"s no denying the build quality of Apple"s recent displays. Both the Pro Display XDR and the Studio Display are more solidly built than any other monitor on the market, full stop. Housed in a solid aluminum chassis, with edge-to-edge glass on the front and an impossibly clean design overall, it"s a beautiful monitor.

I know this seems like an odd complaint about an Apple product that"s clearly meant to be used with Apple computers, but as someone who regularly switches between PCs and Macs for work, it immediately disqualifies what is otherwise a pretty impressive monitor. Because there is no physical way to control the display, whenever you unplug the monitor from your Mac and plug into a PC, the Studio Display is stuck on whatever settings you last used.

The only thing you can control inside Windows is volume. To do anything else – adjust the color profile, dial in the white point, or even just change the brightness of the display – you need to do it while the monitor is hooked up to a Mac.

If you"re using an NVIDIA-powered device, you are able to control basic display parameters like color format and bit depth from the NVIDIA Control Panel, and we can confirm that this works. Changing from 8 bits per channel (bpc) to 10 bpc in the control panel actually made the change at the hardware level. But settings like Brightness, Contrast and Gamma won"t work properly if you adjust them at the level of the GPU.

If you have an NVIDIA-powered PC, you can control a few settings from the NVIDIA Control Panel app. Things like resolution, color format, and bit depth.

In order to take full advantage of the Studio Display"s built-in profiles, white point calibration, and features like Center Stage and Spatial Audio, you need to update to MacOS Monterey 12.3 or newer.

The experience above is in sharp contrast to using this display with a Mac, which is totally seamless. All of your settings are controlled from the MacOS Display menu, there are a bunch of accurate built-in profiles, and you can even fine tune the white point of the display at the hardware level by adjusting it in settings (more on that in a second).

The speakers deserve their own paragraph. There are obviously limitations to what you can do with a 5-speaker array build into a 27-inch monitor, but the sound quality from the Studio Display is mind blowing when you compare it to anything other than a dedicated set of desktop computer speakers. They"re extremely loud, with a resonant bass response and crystal clear reproduction that makes the typical 6W or 9W speakers that are built into most monitors sound like hot garbage.

It seems like their goal was to replace the 27-inch iMac with the Mac Studio paired with a Studio Display, and to that end, a great camera, great speakers, and great microphones were a must. I just don"t really care about any of that, and I don"t think most "studio" professionals do either.

The panel at the heart of this display is, spec wise, identical to the panels used in the 5K iMac and the 5K LG UltraFine display that Apple has been selling for several years, but it is not the same panel. Apple confirmed to me that this is a new panel specially designed for this new thin-bezel monitor.

Apple also confirmed this is not a true 10-bit panel. There were several mentions of "over 1 billion colors" during the presentation, but it"s an 8-bit panel with temporal dithering (AKA Frame Rate Control) just like the LCD panels in the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros. The only true 10-bit panel is Apple"s lineup is still the Pro Display XDR, and it"s safe to assume that it will stay that way.

We tested two different settings: the default Apple Display (P3 - 600 nits) setting, and the Photography (P3 - D65) profile. The former setting locks the display at a maximum brightness of 600 nits, disabling brightness controls. Both delivered similar gamut coverage at 98.8% of DCI-P3 and 86% of AdobeRGB, with a maximum Delta E of less than 1.

Out of the box, the Apple Display profile had a white point that was a little warm, coming in over 6700K and straying from the daylight locus by a Delta E of 3.55. The Photography profile was quite a bit better, hitting 6550K by default and only straying from daylight by a Delta E of 1.58. You can see both "out of the box" measurement reports below:

Fortunately, even though there aren"t any physical controls that will bring up an on-screen menu for adjusting things like color temperature or RGB gains, Apple doesallow you to dial in the white point in hardware. If you select any of the brightness-locked profiles like Photography (P3 - D65), you can use the "Fine-Tune Calibration" setting to fix any issues with your white point.

We"ve highlighted this feature before in our MacBook Pro 16 review, but in case you missed it, all you have to do is type in the measured white point and brightness from your colorimeter, the target white point and brightness that you"re hoping for, and voila... RGB gains are automatically adjusted to get you there.

After calibration, color temperature and white point were pretty much spot on, with a Delta E of 0.15 between our measured white point and D65. Less than 1.5 was already below what"s visible with the human eye, so 0.15 is essentially perfect. You can see the final diagrams from DisplayCAL below: 98.7% DCI-P3, 85.9% AdobeRGB, and a white point that"s perfectly aligned with D65.

Of the 34 test patches, 29 passed recommended tolerance with a Delta E of less than 2, and the remaining 5 were all within nominal tolerance with a maximum Delta E of less than 4. This is exceptional performance that you really only see from high-quality photo- and video-editing displays that put a premium on panel uniformity.

From a performance perspective, this is an excellent panel. My only complaint is the color gamut, which could definitely be wider given the $1,600 price tag. But 99% coverage of DCI-P3 is already great, and when you combine that with the color accuracy and uniformity results above, you"ve got a display that can and should be used for color-critical work.

The Studio Display is an excellent monitor with some really nice features, but it"s expensive, and a lot of that money is paying for features that many creatives don"t need from a "studio" display for professional work.

But while these features, when combined with a color-accurate 5K panel, justify the Studio Display"s $1,600 price tag, I would argue that Apple missed the mark by focusing too much on day-to-day usability and too little on the real-world photo-, video-, and graphic design studios that this display is supposedly meant for. Most studios don"t care about webcams or built in speakers, and some even use PCs in addition to (or instead of) Macs.

If you"re a Mac user who needs a high-quality, color-accurate display for both personal and professional use, with all of the Apple bells and whistles included, then the Studio Display delivers the goods.

I said this was a difficult review for me, and this is why: most of my gripes aren"t with the monitor, but with what the monitor might have been if Apple hadn"t chosen to save all their latest display tech for the next generation of the Pro Display XDR.

If you"re a Mac user who needs a high-quality, color-accurate display for both personal and professional use, with all of the Apple bells and whistles included, then the Studio Display delivers the goods. I"ve said it before and I"ll say it again: I don"t think the monitor is overpriced given the build quality, color accuracy, seamless experience, and the impressive hardware Apple has baked in.

But for the professional creatives in the audience who use their monitor to pay the bills, I"d recommend looking at the professional-grade offerings from EIZO or NEC, or holding off until Apple releases the next generation of the Pro Display XDR. Even if you end up paying a little (or a lot) more, you"ll know that every cent went to pay for features that really matter for professional workflows.

During their review of the Apple Studio Display, the Verge noticed that the webcam quality is quite poor. We compared it to the MacBook Pro and the 4K Logitech Brio camera to find out for ourselves.

Earlier today, in their review of the Apple Studio Display, The Verge pointed out that the Studio Display"s webcam image quality left something to be desired. Not properly testing the camera quality was a major oversight on my part, and so I"ve gone back to compare the Studio Display"s built-in webcam against the FaceTime HD camera inside the 14-inch MacBook Pro and a dedicated Logitech Brio 4K webcam.

Compare that to the output from the latest 14-inch MacBook Pro, which (presumably) uses a very similar camera and very similar Apple AI processing to produce a frame with much better contrast and sharpness, and not nearly as much grain:

Finally, the output from the Logitech Brio 4K, which is much higher contrast and (obviously) higher resolution than either of the Apple cameras. The additional resolution almost makes the frame seem over-sharpened by comparison:

Apple’s products aren’t known for being easy to repair – in fact you could accuse Apple of making them difficult to repair by gluing and soldering components into place and using special security fixtures which make them difficult or impossible to remove.

In addition, the company has always indicated that only authorised service providers should open a Mac and perform repairs and upgrades. Changing a broken iPhone screen at home, or replacing a MacBook battery, isn’t considered safe for consumers. In fact, only businesses with an Apple-certified technician are supposed to perform repairs on Apple products.

With no choice but to pay for an expensive repair or buy a new Mac, iPad or iPhone, consumers frequently choose to replace their Apple product. The problem is that, according to the Right to Repair website, over 53 million tonnes of electronic waste is produced each year, and only a fraction of this is recycled.

Added to this, the fact that Apple stops supporting software updates for various products after a number of years, and the availability of parts for servicing becomes more scarce the older the product gets, means that the lifespan of Apple products isn’t as long as it could be. Apple is by no means the only electronics company guilty of making hard to fix products that end up being thrown away before their time, but it can certainly do its part by improving the repairability of its products, and making repairs easier and cheaper.

Whether you are an environmentally conscious person looking for a new product that will have a good few years ahead of it before it becomes landfill, or someone who doesn’t want to be landed with an expensive or difficult to repair device, we have details of just how repairable Apple’s products are. And if you are looking to get an Apple product repaired we also have advice for you.

Apple sends genuine Apple parts to authorised service providers, and, since August 2019 for iPhone and August 2020 for Mac, independent repair businesses can also get access to genuine parts. But as a consumer you won’t be able to get hold of these parts. In the past iPhones have shown error messages if non-Apple parts are used, so this isn’t an issue you can ignore.

For the average person we’d recommend making an appointment at an Apple Store or seeking an Apple Authorised Service Provider to carry out the repair for you. We’ll discuss who to do that next.

The next question is where can you go to get Apple products repaired. The obvious answer is Apple, but that’s not your only choice. We’ll run through your options below:

The latter option might be best if you don’t have an Apple Store nearby and don’t want to be without your Mac, iPhone or other Apple product while it’s being fixed.

Before you begin we recommend that you check to see if the product qualifies for a free repair. We have a separate articles about the various repair schemes and recalls.

If your Mac, iPhone or iPad is included in one of these recalls or repair programs you may be able to get it repaired for free. Its a good idea to check before you arrange a repair, not just to furnish yourself with the knowledge of what should be on offer to you, but also because if you don’t go to an Apple Store or an Apple Authorised repair shop then you won’t be able to take advantage of the free repair.

The next screen will ask you to Bring in for Repair. You will be able to search for your closest Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (which in our case is an iStore).

You can arrange shipping your device to an Apple Repair Centre either over the phone or online. Apple says this service is available for most Apple products. It seems that most Macs are exempt (at least in the UK), but Apple Watches, iPhones, and iPads can be posted in, for example.

If you have AppleCare+ you can take advantage of the Express Replacement Service that is available for some Apple products. In this case Apple will send you a replacement product before your damaged or non-working product is returned to them (you have ten days or you will pay the full price of the replacement). There may be an additional fee and you only get to use this feature of AppleCare+ for the first two instances of accidental damage. Read:

If you are able to take your Apple product to an Apple Store or an Apple Service Provider they might be able to fix it there for you, depending on whether they have the equipment.

The cost of Apple repairs depends on a number of factors. Generally battery and screen replacements are cheaper than other replacements. And if you have AppleCare+ you may be able to get your Apple product fixed for nothing or just a small fee – and a replacement product almost immediately.

Unfortunately Apple doesn’t offer the same kind of service for replacing iPad screens as it does for replacing iPhone screens. If your iPad screen is accidentally broken, you have the option of replacing your iPad for an out-of-warranty fee. AppleCare+ does include accidental damage protection, but there may be an excess fee.

As with the iPad, if your Apple Watch screen gets damaged, you have the option to service your Apple Watch for a fee. AppleCare+ gives you accidental damage protection where you may be subject to an excess fee.

If your Mac is still in warranty, or you have AppleCare+ your repair will be free. The price of a repair will vary depending on the nature of the problem.

The price of a screen repair depends on whether you have AppleCare+ cover. If you purchase AppleCare+ for Mac then for three years from your AppleCare+ purchase date you will have cover for two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months, each subject to a service fee which is £79/$99 for screen damage and £229/$299 for other damage. If your product is within warranty – which is one year from the point of sale (even if you were purchasing a refurbished Apple product) – and goes wrong you can get Apple to fix it for free.

Other reasons that might help you get a free repair is if your product has been recalled or qualifies in a repair program. As we mentioned earlier, we have a separate articles about the various repair schemes and recalls. Read:

When you are choosing a new Apple product you would be wise to take into account how likely it is to get broken and how easy it will be to repair. One of the main killers of smartphones these days are batteries, another is the ease at which we break the screens – despite all the technical advances of the glass used in the manufacture of smartphones.

Apple has improved the repairability of the iPhone in terms of the screen and battery, but what of its other products? Replacing a screen on an iPad is not as simple as on an iPhone, for example, and the price is a lot higher.

Right to Repair movement and is aiming to put in place laws that will make it compulsory for new devices to be easier to repair due. Hopefully leading manufacturers to build products with removable and replaceable parts.

As a result of this campaign, French legislation has already forced Apple to label products to show a repairability score. The result of the changes should lead to more reparable products with extended lifespans so that they are less likely to end up in landfill early.

The repairbility of a product should be part of the decision when choosing a new product to buy, and thanks to the French legislation Apple is now being forced to reveal this information.

Apple isn’t the only one revealing how easy (or hard) it is to repair Apple products. iFixit is famous for offering guides to the repairability of various Apple products where they highlight the issues that might lead you to needing a repair in the first place – for example, the smashable glass on the front and back of the iPhone. Luckily the glass front of the iPhone is pretty simple and relatively inexpensive to repair, but replacing the glass back could be an expensive job.

Another thing to bear in mind is that there comes a time in every Apple products life when it becomes Obsolete or Vintage. These are terms that Apple uses to describe products once they haven’t been sold for more than five or eight years. Once a product is vintage Apple will only repair it if it has the parts (and then at a price, obviouly). Once a product is Obsolete then there is no possibility that Apple will repair it.

iFixit gives the iPhone 12 series a score of 6/10 for repairability. In favour of the 2020 range of iPhones is the easy access for screen and battery replacement and the fact that most components are modular. The main criticism is the glass back – the problem being that if the back glass breaks, it is necessary to remove every component and replace the entire chassis. iFixit reports that the replacement of the screen and camera of the iPhone 12 series must be activated via the System Configuration app – which again counts our home-fixers.

The iPhone XR gets the same score of 6/10 from iFixit, with the the ease of replacing the screen and battery highlighted, and the same problem with replacing the glass back highlighted.

The iPhone 7 – introduced back in 2016 – marked the last time an iPhone got a score of 7/10 from iFixit. Here the improvements offered by the solid state home button was noted as a point in favour, because the old mechanical button was a common point of failure in older models. Apple gives the iPhone 7 6.6/10 while the 7 Plus gets 6.7/10.

Looking for a new Mac and wondering what is the easiest Mac to repair? The problem with many Mac laptops is the fact that Apple uses a lot of glue and solder to stick components down. By soldering or gluing components into place Apple makes access to faulty components impossible. Aside from meaning you might not have been able to get a broken MacBook Air repaired, this isn’t great news for the environment as Macs that can’t be fixed generally end up in landfill.

iFixit hasn’t yet given the M1 Macs a rating. Apple however has: the M1 MacBook Air gets 6.5/10, which is the same score as it awards the 2018 MacBook Air.

The 2018 MacBook Air gets 3/10 from iFixit. Here the criticism is the keyboard being integrated into the top case, making replacement difficult and expensive (a particular issue given the keyboard problems of the 2016-2020 MacBook Airs). These laptops are also held back by the fact that storage and RAM is soldered on. In the Air’s favour, iFixit does note that the ports, fan, speaker and some other components are straightforward to access.

To get an idea of how that might translate to iFixit’s scores, the 2019 13in MacBook Pro (the entry-level model, but the repairability most likely applies to all models) was given a score of 2/10 by iFixit. The negatives they note include Apple’s use of Proprietary pentalobe screws, the glued in battery, and the soldered-down RAM.

The 2/10 score is a slight improvement on the 2018 model at least: here iFixit criticises the fact that the processor, RAM, and flash memory are soldered to the logic board and the keyboard, battery, and speakers are glued together. The Touch ID button is also highlighted due to it being paired with the T2 chip. Apple awards the 2019 13in MacBook Pro a score of 5.6/10, while the 2018 model scored 6.2/10.

According to iFixit the 16in MacBook Pro is not one to recommend. They give it just 1/10 for repairability, noting that the processor, RAM, and flash memory are all soldered to the logic board, making replacement difficult. They also note that glue and/or rivets secure the keyboard, battery, speakers, and Touch Bar, so those repairs would also be difficult. Also the Touch ID sensor is the power switch and locked to the logic board and paired with the T2 chip, which would make repairs of that component difficult.

The older 15in MacBook Pro was no better, also scoring 1/10, for essentially the same reasons as the 16in model. Apple awards the 16in MacBook Pro 6.3/10.

As for desktops, the 2020 27in iMac gets 4/10 from iFixit. Here the criticism is the fact that Apple makes it so hard to remove the screen to access the components – and it;’s difficult to return it to the state you started. Once you are inside, the exposed power supply is a concern. And altering the internal storage is impossible. Apple hasn’t rated these models yet.

The iMac Pro gets 3/10. Here the criticisms are that key components are buried behind the logic board, requiring a lot of disassembly for access, the loss of the external RAM access hatch – a feature of other 27in iMac models – means RAM is a more difficult upgrade, and the GPU is soldered in place. Apple hasn’t rated these models yet.

The 2018 Mac mini got a repairability score of 6/10 from iFixit. Here the criticisms were that the CPU and storage are both soldered to the logic board and not user-upgradeable and the fact that If any of the many ports is damaged or worn, the entire logic board will need replacing. In its favour the Mac mini components aren’t held in place with adhesive and RAM can be easily upgraded. Apple hasn’t rated these models yet.

The iPad from 2019 gets a repairability score of 2/10 from iFixit. Here the criticisms are the barrier of very strong adhesive making getting inside almost impossible, and the overuse of adhesive once you do get inside. The Lightning port – noted as a “common point of failure” is unfortunately difficult to replace because it is soldered to the logic board.

The iPad Air from 2019 also scores 2/10 from iFixit. Here the battery replacement is at least noted as being possible but they complain that it is “unnecessarily difficult”. Again, there is too much adhesive holding parts and cables in place. The lightning port is difficult to replace because its soldered to the logic board. But at least other components are modular and can therefore be replaced independently (once you get inside).

The 2018 iPad Pro does get a slightly better score – 3/10. Here the criticism is again all the glue that Apple uses inside the case. But at least here the battery is secured with easy-to-remove tabs. Another point in its favour is the USB-C port which is modular and can be independently replaced.

The Apple Watch Series 6 gets a repairability score of 6/10 from iFixit. The screen and battery are reasonably straightforward to replace. The main complaint is that many of the component cables are mounted directly to the S6 and require skilled microsoldering if they are damaged.

So to wrap up, Apple products aren’t easy or cheap to fix. Apple has made it easier to replace the screen and battery in the iPhone, which is a bonus, but given that they are the things most likely to go wrong, an essential bonus. We hope that the new EU legislation coming in will mean that Apple and other companies are more focused on the repairability of their products, extending their lifespans.

There is an issue that affects primarily the 2016 and 2017 models of the MacBook Pro that causes issues with the screen. The issue has been dubbed “flexgate” as the cause of the problems is a flex cable that is just a few millimeters too short and slowly gets pulled off its connection.

MacBook Pro - These are the original MacBook Pros made from 2006 to 2012. They come in three sizes: 13-inch, 15-inch, and 17-inch measured diagonally from the top-left to bottom-right corners. The model name, MacBook Pro, is written on the bezel beneath the screen, and the power button is located on the upper right corner of the chassis. Depending on the type of damage, it is possible to repair these Macs by replacing only the glass panel or LCD. In some cases, both panels need to be replaced to display properly.

MacBook Pro with Retina Display - The 13-inch and 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro Retina models were introduced in 2012 and feature much greater resolution displays and more powerful hardware than their predecessors. Retina Macs can be identified by their thinner chassis, lack of the name on the screen bezel, and the placement of the power button on the keyboard instead of on the chassis. If the screen on the Retina model is damaged, the entire display assembly must be replaced.

If your Mac"s screen is not performing as intended, there are a few symptoms that indicate that critical damage has occurred. Many Apple computers feature a glass panel atop an LCD panel, both of which may undergo damage. When damage occurs requiring screen replacement, a simple search on eBay will help you find what you need. Some common repairable issues include:

Cracks - These are some of the most easily identifiable forms of display damage. Cracks, similar to those seen in a broken windshield, are the result of blunt force damage to the glass of the MacBook. They can occur after the laptop has been dropped or banged. Cracks are easily observable whether the machine is powered on or off.

Distorted image - Visual anomalies include lines, unusual coloration, and blotches of black or distorted colors on an otherwise clear image on the screen. These distortions may occur after the device has undergone physical damage and can only be seen when the Mac is powered on. If you have a distorted image and cracks, it is possible that both panels of your MacBook are damaged.

Black display - If your Apple MacBook"s screen is totally black, it can be more difficult to determine the cause. While damage to the display is a definite possibility, this can also be caused by other hardware issues, such as a power supply failure or problems with software.

When Apple revealed the 14-inch MacBook Pro, it showed that it had reversed course on many design decisions made since 2016. For example, the updated MacBook Pro has no Touch Bar, has multiple port types, and can be charged via a MagSafe connector.

The transition to Apple Silicon was a year in when this notebook was announced. The transition began with the 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air in late 2020, but they didn"t see any significant design alterations.

That changed with the 14-inch MacBook Pro. The number of design changes, feature additions, and performance overhauls was almost too good to be true. This model specifically takes a new place in the lineup with near feature parity with the larger 16-inch MacBook Pro.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro could have been updated in late 2022 with M2 Pro and M2 Max processors built on the 5nm process, however, those rumors never came to pass. Apple revealed the M2 during WWDC 2022, so it would have been a considerably fast release cycle to see the high-end chips so soon.

Apple"s custom silicon design is industry-leading with performance and efficiency that is difficult for competitors to match, and the new MacBook Pros showcase that. Despite a slim form factor and minimal cooling mechanisms, these laptops can outperform many of the high-end laptops on the market.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro is a new size class that sits comfortably between the 13-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro. The edge-to-edge display, 0.61-inch thick chassis, and 3.5-pound weight make for a small yet powerful machine.

At first glance, this laptop is obviously a MacBook Pro with an aluminum body, giant trackpad, and slim enclosure. However, the keyboard is surrounded by a black casing, the display is notched, and there are large feet underneath.

Apple pushed the display to the edge, so there is no longer a MacBook Pro logo underneath, nor is there space for a webcam in the bezel. So, rather than have a uniform, and thick, bezel around the display, Apple went with a notch design. This controversial design enables more screen real estate in the same-sized casing by having a small cutout around the camera module.

The iPhone X pioneered the notch design so it could move forward into an edge-to-edge display while housing a complex True Depth system for Face ID. However, you won"t find Face ID in the latest MacBook Pros due to the extreme thinness of the display lid.

The internal design has been rearranged to enable 50% more airflow, even at low fan speeds. Active cooling is necessary for the high-end processor but won"t always be enabled.

Apple says that many everyday tasks will not cause the fans to spin up thanks to the efficiency of the M1 Pro and M1 Max. Between the fans, aluminum chassis, and raised bottom due to larger feet, the 14-inch MacBook Pro should stay relatively cool during use.

The Liquid Retina XDR Display combines all of Apple"s latest display technologies in one package. It houses a mini-LED backlight, high mobility oxide TFT for 120Hz refresh, and a 1,600 nit peak brightness HDR LCD panel.

The 120Hz ProMotion display enables a variable refresh rate that adjusts to whatever content is on the screen. Users who need a fixed refresh rate for video editing can also set their preferred refresh rate.

The mini-LED backlight is a half-step from standard LED to OLED. It enables a higher contrast ratio of 1,000,000 to 1 with deeper blacks and better control over color accuracy. Localized dimming means reduced halo effects and an overall more accurate picture.

All of these display features first appeared in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Apple has been long-rumored to implement mini-LED across its entire lineup, and now that it has debuted in three products, expect it to show up in more large-sized displays.

While the 14-inch MacBook Pro is an impressive machine, it owes most of its capabilities to the custom Apple Silicon inside. Customers can choose between the M1 Pro and M1 Max processors when configuring their new MacBook, and each offer significant improvements over the equivalent Intel processor.

The introduction of the original M1 processor proved how far Apple could take its consumer-grade machines with custom ARM similar to that used in the iPhone. Now, Apple can show off even more with its pro-grade chips outperforming all but the most powerful Intel laptops on the market.

Each of these processors combines the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine into a single System on a Chip. Thanks to this design, everything happens on the same chip using a unified memory, making every process faster and more efficient.

Apple boasts that the M1 Pro and M1 Max deliver 1.7 times more performance than the latest 8-core PC laptop chip in the same power envelope. And they match the highest performance levels at 70% less power. The Windows laptop Apple compared against was the MSI GP66 Leopard, a 5-pound computer with a two-hour battery life under heavy load.

The M1 Pro supports up to 32GB of RAM and 200GB/s memory bandwidth. This is essentially like stacking two M1 processors on top of each other with even more performance gains.

There are no options for a discrete GPU, and Apple says this is a benefit thanks to the unified memory. The M1 Pro consumes 70% less power at its peak than laptops with a discrete GPU. Apple compared the M1 Pro against the Lenovo Legion 5 for this data — another 5-pound laptop.

If the M1 Pro is like two M1 chips stacked on each other, the M1 Max is double that. It has a 10-core CPU with up to 64GB of RAM and 400GB/s memory bandwidth.

Customers can configure the M1 Max with a 24-core or 32-core GPU and up to 64GB of RAM. Maxing out this processor adds $700 to the base price of the laptop, costing another $800 for the maximum RAM.

Thanks to the efficiency of custom Apple Silicon, the battery life of the 14-inch MacBook Pro extends into all-day use. While intense tasks will drain the battery faster, general use can last 11 hours. And thanks to the 120Hz variable refresh, video playback can last up to 17 hours.

Apple doesn"t include the power adapter needed for fast charging with the base model. Customers can upgrade the included power brick at checkout or get the 96W adapter by default when buying the 10-core M1 Pro or any M1 Max. 140W fast charging is only possible with the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Apple"s design philosophy under Jony Ive seemed to be minimalist for the sake of minimalism. As a result, with each update, Apple removed ports, changed the keyboard, and kept taking away in the name of simplicity. However, Apple has taken a step back to return some high-demand ports for pros.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro has a MagSafe connector, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an SD card slot, an HDMI port, and a headphone jack. Previous MacBook Pros had only two or four Thunderbolt ports and a headphone jack, which is a return to convenience.

As mentioned previously, the return of MagSafe enables 140W fast charging through Apple"s proprietary connector. Of course, this shouldn"t be confused with the iPhone MagSafe system, which uses magnets for accessories and charging.

You can"t discuss a MacBook Pro revision without talking about the keyboard. After years of issues with a butterfly keyboard, Apple shifted back to scissor switches in 2019. The 14-inch MacBook Pro benefits from the latest Magic Keyboard with mechanical scissor switches that are just as clicky and durable as older Mac keyboards.

Apple went with black keys for the new MacBook Pros surrounded by a black frame. Thanks to the form-fitting design, the new frame is made to emphasize the backlit keys.

The lack of physical function keys frustrated many pro users since accessing these keys was now hidden behind a software interface, including the much-needed escape key. Apple gave pros the escape key back in a later update but stopped paying any attention to the Touch Bar.

After letting the Touch Bar go without any feature additions or upgrades for years, Apple has finally removed it entirely. In its place is a full-sized set of function keys — a first for MacBooks.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro is better than the 13-inch MacBook Pro in nearly every measurable way — except price and size. While it is significantly more expensive than the smaller MacBook Pro, it is much more powerful and has several better feature sets.

The port situation is improved on the 14-inch model as well. There are three Thunderbolt 4 ports instead of two Thunderbolt 3 ports, an HDMI port, SD card slot, and MagSafe in place of, well, nothing.

The M1 Pro and M1 Max are not only more powerful than the M1, but they also have better capabilities too. The latest MacBook Pros can connect multiple external displays over Thunderbolt and HDMI, whereas the M1 13-inch MacBook Pro could only have one external monitor.

The loss of the Touch Bar is either a plus or a minus, depending on who you ask. In its place, there is a full-size row of function keys. The 13-inch MacBook Pro is likely the last one to house the Touch Bar.

Unlike Intel versions of the MacBook, there isn"t a performance curve based on chassis size, although with some caveats. Customers will be able to configure the same processors, RAM, and storage in both versions of the MacBook Pro, but the 16-inch MacBook Pro does have some benefits, thanks to its size.

The higher price, new design, and several new features set the 14-inch MacBook Pro apart from the M1-based 13-inch MacBook Pro. We believe the "true" pro laptop starts with the new size class despite both being pro in name.

We tested the M1 Max processor in Geekbench 5, and it scored similarly to the M1 Pro thanks to identical 10-core CPUs. The true benefit of the M1 Max is the additional GPU cores and higher memory bandwidth.

However, benchmark scores can"t capture all of the benefits of Apple"s integrated processors. One significant advantage for video producers is the Media Engine on both the M1 Pro and M1 Max.

The Media Engine accelerates encode and decode processes for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW formats. This effect is doubled on the M1 Max thanks to more encode engines and ProRes engines.

Pro video producers using a Mac Pro would have to purchase Apple"s $2,000 Afterburner card to accomplish similar video processing performance. It is now included on the custom Apple processors.

Geekbench Compute GPU tests didn"t disappoint either, as the M1 Max model scored 59118 thanks to the 32-core GPU. The M1 Pro model with 16-core GPU scored 36390.

We conducted a real-world test between the Mac Pro with AMD Radeon Pro 580X and the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max. A 54 minute 4K video took 17 minutes to export on the M1 Max versus one hour and six minutes on the Mac Pro.

The chassis is still too thin for Ethernet, but inexplicably Apple also limited the type of WiFi included in the new MacBook Pros. Rather than opting for the latest and greatest WiFi 6e, Apple included WiFi 6. Most users won"t notice this distinction, but it is a curious lack of future-proofing.

Apple replaced the Touch Bar with a row of full-sized function keys — a move we"re not entirely happy with. We liked the Touch Bar and believe Apple could have provided a more versatile option than a row of static keys.

The keyboard is unremarkable and with good reason. It retains the 2019 redesigned Magic Keyboard with scissor switches. We like the look and feel of the keys, and they don"t make much noise while typing.

Alongside the amazing Liquid Retina XDR Display, Apple included a new 1080p webcam and six-speaker sound system. While there is a notch in the display, it only houses the webcam and proximity sensor rather than a full Face ID array.

The high-fidelity six-speaker sound system includes support for Dolby Atmos. The speakers can"t compete with the larger 16-inch model but still produce better sound than its predecessors.

The size and weight of the 14-inch MacBook Pro may be enough to deter some users. As the "portable" option below the 16-inch MacBook Pro, it is still quite large compared to the 13-inch model it replaces.

Ultimately, any purchase is a trade-off between size, weight, and performance. Customers who choose this machine will get a Mac Pro they can take into a cafe that doesn"t weigh 40 pounds.

Apple is rumored to be replacing the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the 14-inch body and an M2 processor with lesser features. This would bring the low-end MacBook Pro up to date with modern design while keeping the price close to the current entry model.

It would lack features like ProMotion and mini-LED backlighting to keep costs down. Also, Apple may opt for a different port arrangement, like two Thunderbolt 4 ports versus three.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro lies in a redundant place in Apple"s lineup and is the only Mac that still houses a Touch Bar. Apple didn"t update the model when it introduced the M2 processor, but it could reveal a new middle-tier option in the future.

Many prices seem (relatively) generous! Others, not so much. You can’t just replace your own battery or keyboard on a MacBook Pro, for example! You have to buy the entire top lid that comes with that and other parts preattached, and it’ll cost you more than twice the $199 that Apple charges for a battery replacement.

And while you can replace just the battery on your 2020 M1 MacBook Air, you’ll have to spend $39 — the same price as a full set of keycaps — to replace broken keys on your function row. That might be because Apple ships seven sets of Fn keycaps at a time:

The motherboard prices are particularly interesting. Not only will Apple not let you upgrade to a higher-end board, the company is dramatically incentivizing you to return the original part. It expects you to lay out as much as $4,222 for a new logic board — ouch at having that on my credit card — but you’ll get the vast majority of it back upon return. You should wind up paying $588 for a 16-inch MacBook Pro board, $500 for a 14-inch or 13-inch MBP board, or $368 for an M1 Air board, no matter how loaded it is.

Thank you, it worked like a charm. It took me some 20 minutes in total, I’d say 10 minutes to remove the coating alone. There where two spots which were hydro repellent initially, but that was because of the coating. After some time they finally came off. The result is amazing, I almost forgot how bright the screen was. Thank you
