Flat-panel displays are thin panels of glass or plastic used for electronically displaying text, images, or video. Liquid crystal displays (LCD), OLED (organic light emitting diode) and microLED displays are not quite the same; since LCD uses a liquid crystal that reacts to an electric current blocking light or allowing it to pass through the panel, whereas OLED/microLED displays consist of electroluminescent organic/inorganic materials that generate light when a current is passed through the material. LCD, OLED and microLED displays are driven using LTPS, IGZO, LTPO, and A-Si TFT transistor technologies as their backplane using ITO to supply current to the transistors and in turn to the liquid crystal or electroluminescent material. Segment and passive OLED and LCD displays do not use a backplane but use indium tin oxide (ITO), a transparent conductive material, to pass current to the electroluminescent material or liquid crystal. In LCDs, there is an even layer of liquid crystal throughout the panel whereas an OLED display has the electroluminescent material only where it is meant to light up. OLEDs, LCDs and microLEDs can be made flexible and transparent, but LCDs require a backlight because they cannot emit light on their own like OLEDs and microLEDs.

Liquid-crystal display (or LCD) is a thin, flat panel used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. They are usually made of glass but they can also be made out of plastic. Some manufacturers make transparent LCD panels and special sequential color segment LCDs that have higher than usual refresh rates and an RGB backlight. The backlight is synchronized with the display so that the colors will show up as needed. The list of LCD manufacturers:

Organic light emitting diode (or OLED displays) is a thin, flat panel made of glass or plastic used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. OLED panels can also take the shape of a light panel, where red, green and blue light emitting materials are stacked to create a white light panel. OLED displays can also be made transparent and/or flexible and these transparent panels are available on the market and are widely used in smartphones with under-display optical fingerprint sensors. MicroLED displays is an emerging flat-panel display technology consisting of arrays of microscopic LEDs forming the individual pixel elements. Like OLED, microLED offers infinite contrast ratio, but unlike OLED, microLED is immune to screen burn-in, and consumes less power while having higher light output, as it uses LEDs instead of organic electroluminescent materials, The list of MicroLED display manufacturers:

The 10.1 in. TFT Display Modules are available in two versions with capacitive touch screen and without touch panel. The units come with durable steel mounting bracket that features server-rack-height threaded mounting holes. They provide 1024 x 600 pixel resolution and are compatible with C (Windows / Linux) and SBCs such as RaspberryPi and BeagleBone. The modules are compliant to RoHS standards and feature high brightness LED driver with PWM control.

HDMI interface displays are now bigger than ever before at Newhaven Display. Our HDMI TFT product line is expanding to include two new 10.1” size modules. These two new products feature our 10.1” TFT paired with our custom PCB designed by us here in Elgin, Illinois for HDMI compatibility, among other features. The two options are differentiated by a Capacitive Touch Screen version, and a version with no touch panel. Both options come standard with a durable steel mounting bracket featuring server-rack-height threaded mounting holes. Both of the 10.1” HDMI TFT Modules are 1024x600 pixel resolution and sport MVA technology for 75° viewing from all angles. The boards on these products also have a Texas Instruments Audio Amplifier embedded to allow for the use of the audio channel already supported by HDMI. Easily up-scale your display project thanks to simple, standard HDMI interfacing.

Just like our other HDMI TFT Modules, the process of connecting to the display is extremely easy. There’s no need to work around any ribbon cables or extra controller boards, just connect a standard HDMI cable directly to the TFT Module. Setup for the Capacitive Touch Panel version is easy as well; Connect the touch panel via USB cable and the USB-HID driver recognition will quickly initialize the touch panel for use right away.

The durable steel bracket included with both 10.1” HDMI TFT options provides a secure and stable way to mount the display within any application. The bracket is server rack-unit height making it an easy fit for standard server racks. Newhaven Display is a manufacturer with a highly specialised area of expertise, who almost exclusively focuses on displays. Therefore, you can be sure that the supplier has taken care of the wide compatibility of its products, as well as their durability and manufacturing precision.

The brand’s core products include alphanumeric displays based on LCD and OLED technologies. They come in 16x2, 20x2, 20x4 and 40x4 character configurations with heights ranging from 3.23 mm to 9.22 mm. Liquid crystal products feature white, blue, grey, yellow-green or RGB backlighting. They are fitted with HD44780-compatible controllers, i.e. with a 14-pin parallel interface (+2 backlight power pins). Moreover, they also come in versions controlled via SPI or I2C bus. Selected displays are very thin (up to 1.6 mm), which is achieved, among other things, through the use of the COG (Chip-On-Glass) technology.

In the field of TFT displays, Newhaven Display boasts a selection of matrices in sizes ranging from 1.8″ to 7″, with brightness of up to 1200 cd/m2 (good sunlight-readability). Display resolutions are up to 800x480 pixels. This product group includes products controlled by I2C or SPI signals, however, they also support common video interfaces such as RGB or HDMI. Most of the matrices are enclosed in the thinnest possible housing and feature FPC leads or IDC sockets for easy installation in mobile devices and minimising implementation costs. It is worth noting that this group also includes smart displays with resolutions of up to 1024x600 and sizes of up to 10.1″, equipped with touchscreens (resistive and capacitive, supporting, among other things, the multitouch technology) and therefore perfectly suited for the development of state-of-the-art and intuitive-to-use devices. The supplier also provides a broad selection of training materials (in the form of tutorials) available on its website, as well as extensive technical documentation on its products and their controllers, video libraries and example codes (e.g. Arduino). With this support, you can be sure that the implementation and prototyping stage with Newhaven Display modules will go smoothly and conveniently.

In addition, Newhaven Display, is also a manufacturer of VFDs (vacuum fluorescent display). They include built-in voltage converters, so only 5V DC is required to power them. VDFs can be implemented in a very similar way to standard alphanumeric LCDs (with serial communication support) and exhibit very wide thermal tolerance and high contrast, so they remain readable even in bright sunlight.

The Toradex module provides LCD interface(18/24-bit) which can be used to connect most of the RGB LCDs available in the market. On Apalis/Colibri Evaluation boards or Iris/Ixora/Viola carrier boards, a Unified Display Interface is provided to connect the RGB LCD to the EDT.

We have found the following 40 pin interface which many LCD manufacturers support (pin-outs mentioned below in the table), so we thought of doing an example display adapter board to make it easy for our customers.

NOTE: Generic Display Adapter Board design is just an example, not fully optimized for production. Toradex do not manufacture these boards, but we have given all design data.Also change the over-voltage and current resistors on the display adapter board according to the backlight power requirements of the LCD to connect.

NOTE: Please note that this version of the Generic Display Adapter is only compatible with displays supporting 40 pin standard interface pinout, in which resistivetouch screen signals are also available on the same connector.

Also customer need to assemble correct over-voltage resistor (R39) and over-current limit resistor (R42) depending on the display, please refer Generic Display Adapter schematic for more details.
