As someone who enjoys working out of coffee shops instead of at home or office—the spontaneousness and ever-changing scenery helps my creativity, I think—I have been looking for a portable second screen solution to go alongside my laptop for years. There are no shortage of these products coming out of Shenzhen OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), and while they’re quite affordable (you can find them for $200 to $300), the quality can be hit or miss, with plasticky builds, inaccurately calibrated displays, and wonky USB-C ports that lead to connections being easily lost. I know because I’ve tested a few of these over the years.

Developed by an Australian startup from whom the product got its name, the Espresso Display V2 comes in three configurations, there’s a base model 13-inch screen costing $339, a 13-inch with touchscreen functionality at $439, and a 15-inch touchscreen model priced at $499. The last one is the one I’m testing.

There’s no sugarcoating this: these prices are high but you get what you pay for. In addition to the aforementioned superior hardware quality and a 1080p LCD screen that looks great, Espresso has developed proprietary software for the display that allows it to support stylus input and auto orientation rotation. Even without the software, the display will work as soon as you connect it with a computer or something that can output display signals (like a Nintendo Switch)—but the software is needed for the aforementioned features.

The touchscreen panel, too, is excellent and responsive, at least when I connect it to a UI that natively supports touchscreens, like a Samsung smartphone. If I try the touchscreen functionality while connecting to a Mac, the experience is a bit laggy.

But that’s totally understandable, because Apple did not build touchscreen support into MacOS. Espresso’s software forces that functionality onto MacBooks and iMacs. And considering that, the lagginess is understandable and acceptable.

The Espresso Display’s colors are accurately tuned and match my MacBook Pro’s display well enough that I can edit videos and photos on it. The touchscreen allows me to do things I previously couldn’t do on a Mac, like use my finger to scribble digital signatures on contracts or drag and drop files into Final Cut Pro’s timeline.

But MacOS isn’t optimized for touchscreens, so the buttons can be a bit hard to hit with my stubby fingers. To this end Espresso Display has built a stylus too (it is a separate purchase at $70), this makes navigating MacOS’ small buttons much easier. As mentioned, the Espresso Display isn’t built just for use with a Mac. It can connect to anything that can output display signals, including any Windows laptop, Nintendo Switch, and even some smartphones. In fact, some smartphones from Huawei and Samsung will automatically output a desktop UI when connected to an external screen, so you can use the phones as a computer, provided you also pair it with a keyboard and mouse or trackpad.the Espresso Display connecteed to a Samsung smartphone.Ben Sin

The Espresso Display V2 also have built-in speakers, so it can easily double as a mobile movie or gaming machine. However, its maximum screen brightness of 300 nits is on the low side and will make it hard to use outdoors under direct sunlight. But in coffee shops? Perfectly fine.

At $500, the Espresso Display is, again, quite expensive when compared to the dozens of $200-$300 displays available on Amazon right now. But if you care about build quality, display color accuracy, and intuitive software that allows multi-finger touch gestures, then the Espresso Display V2 may be worth the extra money.

Portable monitors are getting more popular and new kid on the block, Espresso Displays, has what it claims to be the thinnest around. Following a successful crowdfunding campaign, the Espresso Display is now available to buy.

It comes in two sizes and I’ve taken a look at the larger 15.6in model here, complete with some of the accessories you’ll need to make the most out of the screen. A portable monitor can make you more productive – saving you up to 17.5 hours a week, according to the firm – and the Espresso Display even works with the Nintendo Switch when you want to relax.

As mentioned earlier, the Espresso Display comes in two sizes: 13.3- and 15.6in. So, you can decide how much real-estate you need for a second screen, bearing in mind that the smaller one is more portable.

I’ve tested the larger size but the key specs remain the same so my testing should apply to both models. You get a Full HD resolution, 16 million colours and a brightness of 300 nits. Both come with touch-input as standard which in my testing works very well and you can also use a stylus.

You can adjust the brightness, but that’s the only control you get with no on-screen menu here. It’s not immediately obvious as the side buttons adjust volume so you have to long-press the down button to access brightness.

The Espresso Display is also compatible with selected phones, namely Samsung, Huawei and Apple, and also works with the Nintendo Switch without using its proper docking station. This is something the other portable monitors I’ve tested don’t support.

It’s also got good connectivity, supports the Nintendo Switch and has touch input as standard. The performance of the panel is good, too, with decent colour gamut even if brightness is below the quoted amount.

This tool has honestly improved the way I annotate my work. It lets you draw arrows, lines and texts onto your screen and save the screenshot or just erase it after use. I have tried to use other tools such as One Note, but there is an evident lag, and makes using the tool cumbersome. Epic Pen is totally lag free and just buttery smooth. I really recommend everyone this product and see how much of a difference it makes to your work.
